God gave us our life to fulfill a purpose. People may drift away from their purpose, but one may not drift too far away to lose their soul. Our soul represents our deepest self, our reason to live. When we get off track on fulfilling our purpose God has to step in and intervene. One may try and change themselves, thinking their way of life is better than what God gave them. In the book Messenger Mentor was a caring schoolteacher; students loved him, and he loved them (6). Jean shared this with Matty while talking about her dad, Mentor, in Messenger, “Once he would have loved a naughty puppy, Matty, the way he loved you when you were a raggedy boy. I knew it all for certain yesterday when he kicked the puppy” (79). There are moments in our
...face some trials that scar it, but not uproot it. The soul will remain strong and hopeful even after receiving a strike from fate. We need to find this kind of soul in ourselves and plant its seed in our offspring.
Throughout a person’s life, he will go through many experiences that may change him from the person he used to be. Johnny has been abused and mistreated throughout his life. After the beating he got from the socs, Johnny was more anxious and frightened than ever. He would never get over that horrible experience. When describing Johnny, Ponyboy says, “If you can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you’ll have Johnny” (page 11). Nobody would ever expect a shy and nervous greasers to become a hero. Nevertheless, Johnny proved that to be wrong. When the church caught fire, Johnny and Ponyboy abruptly ran inside to rescue the little kids who were trapped. As Johnny was helping a kid to get out, a piece of timber fell on him. As a result, Johnny was in critical condition. At the hospital he told Ponyboy he didn’t want to die because he hadn’t lived yet. Johnny was terrified of dying. After the rumble, Ponyboy and Dally came back to the hospital, and Johnny died. A few weeks later, Ponyboy reads a letter that Johnny wrote him. In the letter Johnny explains how it was worth dying because the little kids were saved. They could live their lives. Johnny wrote, “Listen, I don’t mind dying now. It’s worth it. It’s worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for” (page 178). Johnny was known as a hero. He went from being a shy, quiet boy who was mistreated to a hero who risked his life to save others. Although Johnny died, he was okay with the way he did. The theme of change is certainly shown in
A human being is a complicated entity of a contradictory nature where creative and destructive, virtuous and vicious are interwoven. Each of us has gone through various kinds of struggle at least once in a lifetime ranging from everyday discrepancies to worldwide catastrophes. There are always different causes and reasons that trigger these struggles, however, there is common ground for them as well: people are different, even though it is a truism no one seems to able to realize this statement from beyond the bounds of one’s self and reach out to approach the Other.
The meaning of life is to find the meaning of life. Is it not? We all go through each day trying to figure out which road out the infinite amount of paths will lead us in a better direction where happiness is prominent and society is flawless. However, not every single human being is going to fit on that narrow, one-lane highway to success. Bad choices, accidents, fate, family matters, society, temptation, anger, rage, addiction, and loss of hope can all be deciding factors in opting to choose that wrong path to self-destruction. The adverse thing is, once you've traveled so far down the road, you get so discouraged that you feel like you can never turn back or make up for the "lost time."
Our perception of who we are and our value doesn’t always match what others see in us. Which can lead to us accepting something less than we deserve. In The Cellist, a dog is seen walking across a street by the character Dragan. He sees the dog has a purpose, “This dog has somewhere to to.”, something it’s looking for. He relates it to all of them, the people in the city. They all have a purpose, a goal, they want to survive and live. We all have a purpose and goal in life and we
Growing and changing is something that everyone must do, but everyone does it in a different way. When kids grow up they hit puberty, and their voices and bodies change causing them to look very different from when they were a kid. They then go on to change even more, but this change is different. They change their views on the world, but the older they get, the less they change. This means that people change the most when they are young. When they are young, they are more vulnerable and easily influenced, thats why they are always changing their opinion on things. When they get older they have their set opinion and that rarely ever changes. In “A&P”, the main character, Sammy, goes through a change that gives him more insight on the world
In Jake Reinvented, Jake makes a great example of what can happen when you try to change for someone or something in life. When you try to cover up your past by saying you were a great football player and liked to party when in all reality you changed yourself for a girl who couldn’t even take the blame for hitting Nelson with a champagne bottle and making Jake get something that he didn’t even do is changing your world to try and impress others, when you should of just been yourself and stick with what you’re good with instead of changing, even if it means you’re mentoring students or part of the chess club or in love with dragons and dungeons, don’t change yourself to be somebody you think you can be because it isn’t worth the failure your setting yourself up for.
As I grow older, I change more and more every day. In fact, the only similarity that I share with my former self is that I still play football. In third grade, I played baseball, slacked off in school, had a poor work ethic, and still believed in God. Now, I play Lacrosse, do my best at everything I do, and don’t subscribe to any religion.
In modern society, more and more people vainly try to find meaning in their lives through the acquisition of money, material goods, and popularity. While these secular pleasures may bring us financial security, comfort, or short term happiness, the true purpose of life is to mature physically, mentally, and spiritually. As M. Scott Peck postulates in his series of philosophical novels, if one wishes to be happy and to live life to its fullest, one must simply strive to learn and develop. Thus, human development is the highest aspiration one can possess. Peck speculates in The Road Less Traveled and The Different Drum that in order to grow individually we must first be willing to grow with others as a community. Over the semester, I began to see the validity in his assertions as I saw myself, my freshmen, and others evolve according to the step by step process that Peck lays out in his books. Additionally, I noticed a discernible change in my relationship with God as a result of my absorption of Peck’s theories.
The writer's purpose in this piece is to inform their audience that if one changes oneself they can make a difference in the world, hence inspire people to change their ways to "make the world a better place".
When you are born people are there to take care of you, love you, and guide you through life. As you grow up and life changes, you must take charge of your own life and not become so dependent on others. Throughout the course of life a person will encounter many changes, whether good or bad. In 'A&P';, 'The Secret Lion';, and 'A Rose for Emily';, the main characters in the stories are Sammy, the boys, and Miss Emily who face changes during their lives. All of these characters are in need of change. Because of their need for change, their lives will become much better. They are filled with wonder and awe about the world around them. No matter what type of person, everyone will encounter changes. It is part of the natural process. A person is encouraged to make these changes for the good. Sammy, the boys, and Miss Emily all encounter changes in their lives that fulfill their need to become something different.
All through my life I have lived according to the ways that I was advised and taught, by my parents, Sunday school teachers and most importantly my Bible, to know how to differentiate the right from the wrong. Through the good and the detestable the joys and the sorrows, I always managed to live through the mistakes I made. It then became intuitive for me to know when it was right to laugh or cry, or to feel happy or sad. The young woman, I am today is exactly who I want to be, with the addition of being more responsible, staying dedicated to my religion and choosing the right friends. Thus, I will change my future for the better.
Friends is an American sitcom that started its first season with twenty-four episodes, airing in 1994. The series stayed very close to the image of what real friendships are. Friends delivers hilarious day to day ventures mixed with a little romance. Friends is a series about six young friends all living in Manhattan, New York. Rachel who recently left her fiancé at the altar, comes to Manhattan and ends up living with Monica in her apartment. Ross, Monicas older brother, is seen throughout the first season to be in love with Rachel since they were in high school together. There’s many opinions on what a healthy soul is. It differs from person to person depending on what they believe in and how they live their daily lives. For example, Aristotle’s opinion on a healthy soul would to be the happiest person someone can be with their intellect. On the other hand, Crito’s opinion on a healthy soul would to live a life full of wealth and popularity. Whatever a person’s opinion is, that is how they will live their life and believe that it’s the best for their soul. In my own opinion, changing the world, maintaining physical and mental stability, and religion are the most important parts of building a healthy soul.
Life’s offerings such as: interests, talents, jobs, religion, or relationships are the catalysts through which we put meaning into our lives. When we find someone or something that we love or feel passionate about that puts meaning into life. It makes people feel as though they are fulfilling a want or desire, which would also lead to feeling very accomplished and happy. Finding a passion gives life a purpose. Jay Earley said it best when he wrote, “I define life purpose as a contribution to the world that uses your whole self fully and gives your life passion, fulfillment, and meaning through dedication to something larger than yourself” (Early 6). We are able to feel that we are here for a reason. Everyone needs something in their life that they strive for or love to execute. If we weren’t to look for these passions then there would be no purpose in living. We don’t want to go through life not caring about anything and having nothing that brings great joy to our life. Not having a passion would put a void in one’s life and a feeling of emptiness. There are many ways to achieve this love or to find a passion. Many people obtain their purpose in life by seeing their interests or talents and pursuing them. Other people find meaning through their job. Many people turn to religion, primarily I would say that people find meaning in life through relationships.
