Messages From a Musical

“That can not be my name,” I said to my best friend, Sariah, as we stared at the paper on the wall. “No way.” But it was there. My name. In the place for “Sweet Sally,” the lead in the school musical. It was one of the most exciting moments of my eighth grade school year! It was unbelievable to see it, and I figured it would be so easy. I was definitely wrong. I learned three very important lessons from being the lead in the school musical. “What do you mean? You’re amazing! You totally deserve this.” Sariah was always so supportive of me, even though we had our down moments. I tried to do the same for her, but it was hard when she was so much better than me. Being her best friend, however, I couldn’t let her see that I was annoyed, so I just let it go. I smiled at her. “Thanks.” She had gotten the part of “Mrs. Mugwump,” an old woman who bossed me around! I was relieved that she had a smaller part because she had the lead in last year’s school musical. Now it was my turn. We practiced and practiced for weeks on end! It was hard work and extremely time-consuming, but all worth it in the end. At first I was nervous about singing by myself in front of everyone else, because I had heard most of them sing and thought they were so much better than me! But it didn’t seem like anyone really had a problem with my voice except me. I was always so self-conscience about my looks, my voice, and my personality. Eventually I became confident in my voice, which I believe made me a better singer in the end. You never know how good you really are until you sing in front of your whole town and see their reactions. We performed the show a total of five times: one for the elementary schools, one for the middle s... ... middle of paper ... ...nity to travel to state drama and meet students from other places in the state. Most people think that sports are the best way to make new friends, but I strongly disagree! These people will absolutely never renege! They are far from inhibitable. Acting is a definite way to make some crazy, fun, outgoing friends who you know will always be there for you, and those are the best kind of friends. Obviously, the experience of having the lead in the school musical helped me realize some important things. I learned that you truly must believe in yourself and know that you can do whatever you want! Also, I discovered that being the boss isn’t necessarily a great thing to be. Finally, I figured out that acting is an amazing way for you to meet people who are like you and enjoy the same things you do. To think it all started with a piece of paper taped to a wall!
