I came to Brooklyn College in the Fall of 2015 as a meek, and unsure transfer student with a budding interest in History. From my very first round of courses, all of you whom I’ve had the pleasure of taking classes under have made me feel more than welcome here at Brooklyn College—especially in the halls of Boylan—and helped foster that early spark of interest into a not only a fuller appreciation, but a worthwhile skill as well . It was an unexpected honor and pleasure to receive this Merit Scholarship at the end of my undergraduate career. I would like to thank the Chair of the Department, and all of its faculty, but especially Professors Napoli, Warren, Wills, Fishman & O’Keeffe, for teaching me the ropes, and providing me with the guidance
Stewart’s essay “The Field and Function of Black Studies”, he implies that black history is dominated by continuing challenges by its critics and the weak attachment of many scholars to the black studies movement and to black studies units even when the research of such scholars examines the black experience (pg. 45). Statistics show that 70.2 percent indicated that the number of full-time faculty members who have appointments outside black studies and another academic units is stable, proving the fact that black studies has established a beachhead in higher education. This statistic demonstrates how things have been stable in terms of growing the teachings of black studies, which causes challenges. A challenge that can be seen from this issue, is the lack of financial support available to faculty and students. Small budgets are provided to Black Study departments at many universities, therefore, making it difficult to purchase materials and hire more educated, experienced staff
On the evening of Monday, October 28th, 2002, this great woman visited the faculty, staff, students and guests at Rutgers University. To enter the little gymnasium on College Avenue, where the event would be held and would eventually house nearly 2,000 people, everyone needed a ticket, a ticket that I did not have because they had sold out so quickly. Nevertheless, I was determined to be there. So I adorned myself in the appropriate attire, left my apartment, and at 6:45 found myself on College Avenue in a line that spanned from the doors of the gym all the way to Au Bon Pain. No one seemed to care that it was 30° outside that night. Up and down the line you could hear snippets of conversations resonating excitement and anticipation of the night’s event. For some who had seen Dr. Angelou in the past it would be an added treat, but for me it would be a first. I was going through ideas of things to say to the doorperson so they would let me in without a ticket.
I’m so happy to be given the opportunity to join National Junior Honor Society(NJHS). I would love to be a member. I think it is important for kids to be involved in the community. Also, myself personally it would be an honor to be a face for our school.
A global citizen is that who is willing to use its voice and knowledge to make a change. No one would ever be able to make a change in just one day, it is something that takes time and devotion. I’m really interested in diversity and I’m seeking to what is my role is as a world citizen. The fact that I’m searching for an international education is the proof of my desire to establish myself as a global citizen and my interest in the world issues.
The National Honor Society is a very prestigious organization that I would love to be a part of. It was an honor to be nominated as a candidate. I am currently a sophomore in high school, and I have always wanted to be a member of the National Honor Society. As I look back over the years and think of the times I have attended the ceremonies and saw all the awards the members received, I recall saying to myself “That’s going to be me one day.”. I asked my teachers about all the requirements that had to be met to be a National Honor Society member and I made it my main goal to meet each and every one.
As a student at Northvale Public School, I have grown up with my older siblings being inducted into an organization called the National Junior Honor Society. I had seen all the hard work and dedication they put into their school work and activities just to get into this society, making me want to be just like them. Then a few weeks ago, I found a note on my desk in homeroom telling me that I had been nominated to be apart of this society. Through citizenship and character, leadership, and service, I intend on being inducted into the society I have heard so much about. Though it will take a lot of effort this school year, being a part of this society is a dream of mine that I will make sure to come true.
Becoming an intrical part of the National Junior Honor Society would be a great privilege. NJHS established in 1929. From its conception, it has validated five guiding principles, which are; enthusiasm for scholarship, desire to render service, leadership, responsible citizenship, and development of character. Thus, I would not only like to join for the academic recognition, but to further develop and challenge myself within these areas. For many years, NJHS has paved a road to success for many alumni. Hopefully soon, I will be counted amongst them.

When notified by a few peers that they had seen my name on a nomination list for the National Honor Society, I was surprised and genuinely flattered. After researching more about what it was, it was an honor to be recognized for all I do every day in order to be successful in life. Every year I make sure I take every opportunity to get the best education I can, like all honors or AP classes. My freshman year, I took AP Biology and have to admit I was initially intimidated, but I knew if I applied myself and kept on going through the course it would benefit me in the long run and I ended with a B and was ecstatic when I discovered that I passed the AP test. Passing one AP course gave me the ambition to go ahead and take more, so next year I plan on taking three AP classes; Psychology, Environmental Science and U.S. History. Along with these, I am very set on dual enrolling. I’m willing to work as hard as I can in order to ensure my success.
I am deeply grateful to be given the opportunity to apply to such an important organization as National Honor Society. To me, it reflects that I have achieved my goal of working as hard as I can to set an example in both my school and community, and I could not be more honored. This organization does great things for any community it touches, and I believe that I can play a part in furthering the impression that is made.
I am interested in joining the Honors College because I believe that it will encourage me to go beyond my boundaries and explore myself and my aspiring field of computer science in ways that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.
Many issues were raised by Dr. Leonel Lim pertaining to the concept of meritocracy such as the tension between its elements of egalitarianism and elitism, which has in turn scrutinized the discursive potency and relevance of meritocracy’s egalitarian promises (Lim, 2013) and the continued legitimacy of elitism in the society. (Wong, 2013) With this in mind, how do we reconcile the apparent contradictions between meritocracy’s egalitarian and elitist strands, on the need for re-working the ideology in schools and society?
Changes have to be change by the fact that many students from Anaheim High School are not succeeding, the way to do it is to let them earn themselves a full ride scholarship to a four year University. For the ones that can achieve the goal do not have to struggle for money in the future, which then have to pay early on. Many of the students from California receive scholarship by after school programs, sports, and excellent grades. Anaheim High School should pressure the students to have extraordinary grades throughout their freshmen year to senior year and the only way to do that is to give them a reward for their hard work. A program that only focuses on freshmen students to be drafted for a total of forty-percent. The students will have
Multiculturalism and participating in community service has been a meaningful aspect of my life and thousands of United States citizens across the country. I am a young, Rwandan, woman and am in love with my heritage and helping others embrace their own. Maintaining our cultures and learning about others help every generation to become more open minded about the world around us. Community service helps to positively transform the lives of ourselves and those around us in little ways that will ultimately make a significant impact in our local, national, and global communities. I would like the opportunity to benefit those in my next season of life (attending university) because school organizations and other community service programs are one of the several reasons why I am who I am today.
