Would you want to put your child into a school where they will be more likely to get bad grades, lose interest, or fall behind? Merit pay or teacher pay for performance is linking how well the students do on standardized tests with the pay of their teachers. If a student does exceptionally well on a standardized test then the teacher would be rewarded with money. On the other side of it, if a student does poorly on a standardized test, then the teacher will not receive as much money. Teachers pay should not reflect how well their students do on standardized tests. Because merit pay will cause teachers to be more dishonest, and it will drive teachers out of the industry. Teachers will give more of an effort. They will become more organized and make sure that they do not get off track. They will not give busy work or get off task because they want to see their students test scores improve so they can get more money. This would make teachers try harder because they want more money and they would have to work hard for it. These are just some of the methods that they could use to get high test scores on standardized tests. Ultimately, teachers will assign more homework and assignments to see if the kids are understanding the units. This would help the students test scores improve because if the teacher notices that the student is not understanding the unit, then they would help the student to understand it. These teachers just want to see their students succeed. They will not do whatever they can just to get the extra money. Even though some teachers just do it for their students and not for the money some teachers do. Which means the students with those teachers are more likely to fail. There also might is a chance that some students grades would go up but, the majority of the grades would decrease because of lack of understanding the material. The students would not understand because the teachers would be so focused on trying to get the extra money that they will either confuse the student or be to busy trying to help the higher risk students. It would create a stronger future for our children, helps teach quality, and helps the parents that do not have the time to teach their children these things. Teachers who lack passion and desire to teach what they are given can translate and manifest its way to students as they also lose aspirations to come to school and learn only what will be on exams they are supposed to take to show that they are “learning.” Students come to school to learn things they did not know prior and with the acquisition of knowledge it can many a times create a drive for students to expand upon a particular subject, which can ultimately determine their careers and goals, but this whole process is shutdown with standardized tests, as many topics and subjects are limited to a few basic ones that put out the fire students are expected to have.

Standardized testing assesses students, teachers, and the school itself, which puts a great deal of pressure on the students. High scores show that the school is effective in teaching students, while low test scores make teachers and schools look as though they are not teaching the students properly. This is not always the case. There are teachers who do teach students what they need to know to pass the test, but their students are still unprepared. To begin, with, school should not pay students for good grades because they are constrained to earn good grades. Students learn if they can work in large groups or if they work better individually. They also learn what kind of learner they are when it comes to taking in information given to them by the teacher. The United States of America is ranked 15th in the world for it’s quality of education. Improvement in our education system is necessary if we want to keep up with the best nations in the world. States across the country are assessing teachers and schools by using standardized test scores. By using standardized test scores, states link high stakes to the results such as grant money, salary, and jobs as incentive to improve the scores for the following year. In Wisconsin and other states, 50% of these evaluations are based solely on how students score on these tests making the results have a critical impact, affecting not only the futures of the students, but also the futures of their teachers. Although it is important to give schools and teachers feedback so that they can better educate students, high-stakes testing should be used minimally for this purpose because of the lack of conclusive results they produce, and the detrimental effects that they can have on students, teachers, and even the whole schooling community.
