Hydrargyrum comes from Greek words for “water-silver”, which concisely describes the nature of mercury. Mercury is a metallic chemical element and it was liquid state room temperature. Its melting point is -38.842°C and its boiling point is 356.58°C. Mercury was known to the ancient Greeks, Romans, Chinese and Hindus. Each civilian had its own legends about mercury. But it was not been recognized as an element before the end of the 18th century. Mercury is also known as "quicksilver," a reference to its mobility. Through those amalgams, mercury can be used to extract gold from rocks. When mercury comes into contact with gold, the gold dissolves into mercury and then the two are separated, with the mercury being distilled off. Making hats from animal pelts is one of the interesting uses. In the 18th century, people used the mercury nitrate compound to clean the pelts before they turned them into hats. But later they discovered that a large number of people who were working with those chemicals ended up suffering from brain damage. Mercury also forms compounds with other elements. Mercury also has many uses as a compound. Calomel (mercurous chloride, HgCl2) is used as a standard in electrochemical measurement and in medicine as a purgative, which is a substance that makes you empty your bowels. Mercuric Chloride (corrosive sublimate, HgCl2) is used as an insecticide and disinfectant. Mercuric oxide is used in skin ointments, which usually put on the skin where it is sore or an injury, in order to cure it. Mercury oxide also used to make mercury battery. Mercury sulfate is used as a catalyst in organic chemistry. Vermilion, a red pigment, is made of mercury sulfide. Mercury fulminate, Hg(CNO)2, is used as a detonator, a small amount of explosive in a bomb that explodes first and causes a larger explosion, or an electrical device that is used from a distance to make a bomb explode.
