(Mercedes Vargas smirks at the camera as the scene fades in on the former 3WL Television and World Champion at home in her apartment, a palatial loft in New York’s Jackson Heights neighborhood. It’s nearly seven months since the Wild Stampede pay-per-view. She sits in an arm chair wearing an Eli Manning jersey along with a New York Giants baseball cap.)
"So, I bet you all have been waiting these last few months to hear my thoughts on the premier of Battlegrounds for AESOP World: Women’s Pro Wrestling. Well, you’re in luck, because I have a lot of things to say on various subjects, but let me first start out by saying I’m going to miss 3WL, I truly am. I’ve only been a part of 2 of their 11-year history, but they were good times nonetheless. As you can probably see, I’m title less, and the reason for that is due to one person, and one person only, Trish Newborn. And this is where I’m going to bring this into focus.
"Now everyone loves a good redemption story, and Wild Stampede was Trish’s redemption story. Forget whether she could finally win the World Championship. The question is will anyone remember her after the fact. I don’t think so. Will anyone remember her leaving a legacy in 3WL? Not by a long shot. Oh, sure, they know who Trish Newborn is, they know she's also a Hall of Famer such as myself, but when people remember 3WL, when they remember the names who carried the illustrious championship, they think of Tory Blaze. They think of Star. They think of Jordan Divine and Mystika and Eva Rodriguez. Serena Royale and Nicky Silver and Crystal Hilton. They think of Dame Barbara Windsor and Veronica Valiant. They think of Zelda Knite. And of course, yours truly. But Trish Newborn?"
(Mercedes leans back in her chair, shak...

... the history we have against each other all you like, but it's there, Trish. It's there. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had my share of losses, but I’ve also had my share of victories. And history dictates that a few of them were over you. But, of course, you'll tell me different.
It's no secret that we both have huge, massive egos, and come Sunday, March 17, we'll want to prove who is really, well, better. And maybe I'm in over my head. Maybe I'm good, but you're simply just that better. No, you're not better than me; you're the “Best of the Best.” How can anyone try to compete with that? Certainly not I.
All hail, Trish. Is that what you want? Well, there you go.
I should know by now that I'll never reach your level, Patty,
I'll never be the best...
because I'm better than the best.
I'm the greatest.
And I've got fifteen pounds of gold to prove it.
There are many aspects to the sport of wrestling, and coaching the sport successfully can be very challenging. Dan Gable, one of the best wrestlers and wrestling coaches of all time, wrote a book about all the things it takes to be a successful coach. According to Gable, the first step to being successful is defining your wrestling philosophy, or who you are as a coach. Part of Gable’s philosophy was to set high standards and strive to reach them. Another part of his philosophy was that champions are not always the guys that win the most matches. True champions are the guys that work there hardest to be the best that they can possibly be. Dan Gable knew his philosophy and stayed true to it, which is just one of the many reasons he was so successful.
“Whatever comes next for me, as far as boxing is concerned, I have no regrets. I would never change what I've accomplished and the history I've made.” (Oscar De La Hoya). This quote was said by the one and only Oscar De La Hoya, the man who I chose to write about. Oscar was born in Los Angeles, CA on February 4, 1973. His nationality is American from a Mexican origin and comes from a boxing family. His nickname was “The Golden Boy”. I chose Oscar De La Hoya, because he is the greatest boxer known to man.
Cesar Chavez uses morals and his audience fear of destruction to justify his stance on non-violent protests . Martin Luther King jr was an activist and civil rights leader that did not use violence to get his point across like many other activists at that time. Cesar Chavez wrote on the anniversary of his death explaining why using nonviolence is the way to advocate rights for those in need. His article was put in a religious organization that helped people who were in need of help. Cesar Chavez uses morals as a way to appeal to the religious side of his audience. Cesar Chavez also uses the fear of losing power to prove that doing nonviolent protests are the right way to spread his cause.
Lisa Lockhart is no rookie to the Rodeo world. She is an extremely accomplished barrel racer. She is a nine-time WNFR qualifier and a four-time Canadian champion. At the 2014, Wrangler’s National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) Lisa won the average title and finished runner-up for the World Title, crossing the impressive one million dollar mark in career earnings. Her horse Louie is a beautiful Buckskin horse that goes everywhere with Lisa, when it comes to rodeo he is Lisa’s best friend. “As long as I do my job, he just does his. He is just a horse that is so willing to please. Over the past five years, Lisa has been a very consistent competitor finishing top five in the World Standings each year.
Adriana Lions was a D-List talent who overnight had become and A-List commodity, impossible. Something something something, impossible! Something something something, impossible! Something something something, impossible! Something something something, impossible! To put it planly. This whole situation with Adriana Lions is utterly, totally, and without a doubt
...addition, no one could beat the way I was feeling. This is where I belonged even though others thought different. I had never once thought about going to rodeos until I met Cole. He had led me to something that I will now look forward to going to for the rest of my life. Even with the blistering sun and even with the pouring rain, I found a sense of my own belongingness. Just because I didn't look the part of a usual rodeo fan, didn't mean that I wasn't one of the biggest fans of all. I was glad that I could be a supporter for my friend, but most of all I was glad for the new, thrilling experience. It was a feeling that no roller coaster ride could ever give me.
Everyone has a cause or agenda, but it’s the way you go about delivering it that gets attention. The main way that Cesar Chavez’s rhetoric works in his written speech is through constituting identification in the discourse. The speech was not produced for the mere purpose of telling a story to the entertain an audience. Instead, Chavez strategically used key words to persuade the intended audience to act, or at the very least think about the message.
Isla, a poem written by author Virgil Suarez, in 2000, refers to how a young immigrant boy feels, compared to Godzilla. Godzilla, is a series of movies about a “fictitious giant monster spawned from the waste of nuclear tests, and is discovered in the sea and rises to threaten Japan. The only hope of stopping Godzilla is the oxygen destroyer, a weapon as deadly and as morally troubling as the atomic bombs that created the monster”(Encyclopaedia Britannica,2017). Poet Virgil Suárez left Cuba with his family when he was just 12. His family eventually settled in the United States(poetryfoundation.org, n.d). Virgil Suarez is comparing himself to Godzilla. He feels lonely and unwanted ,and how he had known this pain from an early age.
She has had many struggles along the way, but the struggles have made her not only a better player but a better person all around. “Kerri was always told that she wasn't good enough in high school Kerri had to work 100% harder than her other teammates, to prove not only her coaches and teammates also that she deserve to be where she is now.” This is because, she was kind of a slow learner at the beginning of her high school volleyball career, she was a slower learner when it came to drills and rotation for positions. So she was always pushed to the side because he coach would get frustrated with her. Kerri was always told she was good enough by other teammates, it didn't only hurt her and make her feel bad about herself. But it always gave her the drive to push harder in practice and games. To practice outside of practice, and condition on free times. Just to prove that she is good enough and that she can be the best of the best. “ Kerri Walsh had just came out of a shoulder injury again. She dislocated it during a game and kept playing on it and made it 10x worse then it would have been. Of course this what her right shoulder. So because if this injury, she had to have her 4th shoulder surgery on her right shoulder.” Kerri has had four major surgeries on her right shoulder. It was very hard for her because she needs her shoulder for
Through dealing with stereotypes, the motivation of my mother to be better, and constantly switching environments, I have become an individual in American society. Through these experiences, it has helped me to fit into society as my own person.
“Ladies, ladies can you stop fighting Isa what the heck were you thinking risking your life and ours…Ok Helen’s. And Helen if you ever lie to this little girl again I will make your life hell every time you come down that street.”
Billie Jean King, knew at an early age she wanted to be the very best in something. She wanted to be the best tennis player in the world, and made that decision by age 12. Growing up in the 1950’s did not stop her from believing that she will be the best in the world someday. Billie Jean King had the natural drive to win, and her character was so strong that older children were looking up to her. Her dynamic path started on achieving the best accomplishment in tennis, then she adapted to fighting for equal rights for females in sports and in society. Her win over Bobby Riggs in the “battle
In 'Girlfight', the main character is at first skeptically viewed by her coach and then she is viewed as a humorous oddity until she proves her determination. Last year, Muhamid Ali and George Foreman's daughters decided to fight each other in a rematch of the famed Rumble in the Jungle. This received major network coverage and was a pay-per-view event on HBO, but the girls were trivialized and many late night commentators ridiculed the idea of women boxing more than one round. Jay Leno suggested that in between rounds, the ladies would stop to touch up their makeup or become enraged if their hair was mussed during the match. The event was well watched because of this curiosity, and it hopefully proved that the daughters of Ali and Forman were just as much an athlete as they were. Women or men who enter a non-traditional sport for their gender will always be viewed with skepticism.
Ronda Rousey has had a major impact on women’s participation and interest in the sport of MMA. Mixed Martial Arts or MMA is the most violent sport there is today. Over the past 20 years Mixed Martial Arts has risen in popularity. MMA is seen as a male dominated sport though women’s participation in the sports has gone up recently. On February 23, 2013 two women were featured on the main fight card for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The fight in which Ronda Rousey defeated Liz Carmouche was a huge success. This fight was the first of its kind, for the previously all male UFC. Women have been competing in MMA since the mid-1990s, though for year’s women fighters were fighting in Japan. The first women’s MMA fight in the United States of
CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, echoes through my head as I walk to the middle of the mat. "At 160lbs Aidan Conner of La Junta vs. Rodney Jones of Hotchkiss." All I can think of is every bead of sweat, every drip of blood, every mile, every push up, every tear. Why? All of this: just to be victorious. All in preparation for one match, six minutes. For some these six minutes may only be a glimpse, and then again for some it may be the biggest six minutes of their life. Many get the chance to experience it more than once. Some may work harder and want it more than others, but they may never get the chance. All they get is a moral victory. Every kid, every man comes into the tournament with a goal. For some is to win, for some is to place, others are just happy to qualify. These six minutes come on a cold frigid night in February at a place called the Pepsi Center. Once a year this gathering takes place when the small and the large, the best of the best, come to compete in front thousands of people. I am at the Colorado State Wrestling Championships.
