As a young adult, growing up with multiple social media accounts is nothing new. People all across the world are connected with a free app and this technology has both positive and negative sides. Mental illnesses and intellectual disabilities are something that people all around the world suffer from each day. Those affected often have difficulty with simple, everyday activities and looking at social media might just add to the feeling of being different. To me, the media poorly portrays the effects of these disorders, illnesses, and disabilities more often than they show what they truly are. A well heard of example is an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend referring to the other as psycho, whether they truly suffer from a psychotic disease or not. Somebody is not ‘psycho’ because they are no longer happy or are taking their life in a new direction. Somebody is not in their right mind to use this term as a hurtful describing word with no remorse or thought of those who truly suffer. To me this term is most often used without thinking. It appears less offensive to others than ‘retarded’, even though it is every bit as offensive and wrong to use as a describing term. Psycho, to me, is a term that is hard to use to describe anybody, whether they suffer from psychotic disorders or not. It truly separates someone just as much as calling somebody ‘retarded’ would. Children start with name calling at a very young age with things such as ‘four-eyes, stupid, dumb, and ugly’. Those terms are every bit as hurtful as ‘bipolar, psycho, and retarded’ but at a young age it seems that it is okay for children to use those words. The vocabulary of children only grows from this point, and if it’s okay to call someone stupid with no thought why isn’t retarded okay as well? I know that I have wronged and used the term psycho to describe someone myself, and thinking about how this affects those who truly suffer makes me realize how wrong that is and is shouldn’t be used like that. As children grow up people change, those who they used to play with in kindergarten go through something traumatic and now see things differently and are able to see the wrongness in something where others do not. This becomes true even more so as people experience new things. Before meeting someone who is living with mental retardation one might be more likely to describe someone or something as retarded. It often takes an experience like meeting someone who lives with mental retardation to see that using it out of context is very, very
