This semester was important to comprehend mental health to social workers. Mental health has the same dimensions to drug and alcohol abuse bio soc= psy. These tools are so important to understand why our mind and brain function in certain forms that other people do not do. So, mental health is a complex matter because every single brain functions in different ways. In some occasions follow the same patterns and treatment, but they can have different results. Human beings are complex. Even though people have same symptoms, they need different treatments because they have different reactions. It is important to distinguish what is mental health and mental illness. Mental health according to CDC is “…a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” While mental illness is define as “health conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or behavior (or some combination thereof) associated with distress and/or impaired functioning.” When we experiment a good mental health, we have flexibility in our lives, sense social of wellbeing, productive behavior , clear thinking, sense of belonging, resilience to stress, empathy, stable relationship, respect for self and others, we are optimism, and spirituality , that is not mean religion. However, in some day of our lives, we can feel in troubles because our mind in some occasions does not work very well if we have stressors that we cannot solve easily. However, we need to be honest and not always are able to solve every singles case. Thereby, we can refer cases to other social workers who can work to give services that clients require. In my opinion, mental health is so complex. I have had other approaches to mental health because two of my sisters are volunteers in NAMI, so they provide me some information and perspectives. Also, I saw mental health in other perspective because in my culture is a taboo to go in any matter that relate to mental problems. It is difficult to erase this negative view. Thus, I worked to be more sensible and more responsible in my opinion about this matter.
Social workers level the playing field for individuals and families that have experienced hardships, terminal illnesses, mental health disorders and other adverse environmental situations that inhibit their ability to thrive within society. Social workers accomplish this by providing individuals and families the resources necessary to ensure that their needs are being met. My experience in mental health clinical was very different from any other clinical I had before. In a mental health clinical setting, I am not only treating client’s mental illnesses, I am also treating their medical problems such as COPD, diabetes, chronic renal failure, etc. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the unexpected events. In this mental health clinical, I learned that the importance of checking on my clients and making sure that they are doing fine by performing a quick head-to toes assessment at the beginning of my shift.
