Obtaining a diploma is an expected rite of passage for most people. Students begin their education with a diploma as the end goal; with that diploma, students not only graduate from high school, but they also graduate into the “real world” of adult responsibilities. For many students, that rite of passage is so expected that it is taken for granted that it will come easily. However, for some students experiencing difficulties with their mental health, that expectation is much more difficult to achieve. Because of the harsh realities and obstacles that commonly accompany a mental health issue, students experiencing these difficulties require additional support, especially if these issues result in large chunks of time missed from school or chronic absenteeism. Attendance is a primary indicator of successfully completing a high school diploma and becoming a positively contributing member of society. According to a study conducted regarding risk factors for absenteeism, “school absenteeism…is a main predictor for school drop out” (Ingul et. al, 2012, p. 93). Students who do not attend school do not graduate. Unfortunately, there is a disproportionate number of students with high absences who are also experiencing mental health issues. By measuring the number of absences from students who also report receiving mental health services, another study found the highest number of absences occurred among those students who report receiving services (Askeland et. al, 2015). Overall it was found that “youth with problematic school absenteeism tend to have higher incidences of anxiety disorders, affective disorders, disruptive disorders, substance abuse, or some combination of these” (Ingul et. al, 2012, p. 94). According to an article by Josephine Marcotty in Minneapolis’ Star Tribune from April 10, college students lead “hyper-enriched lives,” said Greg Kneser, dean of students at St. Olaf College. That’s what makes this generation of students distinct from its predecessors, he said. That is why more students who cannot cope with these feelings end up at college counseling centers with “increasingly serious mental-health problems.” 15 to 20 percent of college students nationally were diagnosed with depression. The second most common diagnosis was severe anxiety. According to the article, it is not unusual for mental-health issues to become apparent during a student’s college years.
Mental health difficulties can have a profound effect upon a person’s quality of life. As many as one in three people are thought to suffer some form of mental health problem. Can you picture the student voted “most likely to succeed” in your graduating class? This individual must have had everything going for them. They probably had good grades, popular, never in trouble, no health issues and socially and emotionally stable. However, twenty years later, after graduating college, a successful business owner, had a beautiful wife and three kids, he decides emotionally he is done and takes his own life. Mental health issues can manifest at anytime with varying degrees of significance on the emotional stability of a person. Factors such as socioeconomic status, biological and environmental issues all dictate mental health needs. Obviously, a variety of circumstances can evoke these mental health issues. Now imagine coping with these mental health issues and being expected to still be a normal student and conform to your peers around you. This is what we expect of our students dealing with a variety of mental health issues. The policies and procedures are established to meet the needs of all students. The mental health issues are recognized and evaluated based on the best placement for the student to receive an education. The public school system has the responsibility to provide a free and appropriate education. The school does the best they can to provide a whole school approach to deal with the increasing number of mental health concerns. However, the mental health concerns carry on beyond high school.

Following my high school graduation, I attended Denison University for two years. Unfortunately, during this time, I struggled with financial issues that took a toll on my mental health. Due to anxiety and depression, I experienced two difficult semesters emotionally and academically. I had to be hospitalized for a week in the spring of 2016, and thus fell behind in two of my classes. I experienced similar difficulties in the spring of 2017 when my anxiety and depression worsened due to the ongoing financial stress of high tuition along with other personal issues.
Providing university students with brief treatment is a role that is important to college counseling centers given that college counseling centersthey are continually seeing an increase in the number of students seeking psychological help as well as an increased severity of the pathology with which students present (Brunner, Wallace, Reymann, Sellers, McCabe, 2014; Erdur-Baker, Barrow, Aberson, Draper, 2006). In short, college counseling centers are seeing evermore demands being placed upon them. Beyond the increased severity of presenting concerns, counseling centers across the nation are also seeing an increase in the chronicity of presenting illnesses (Erdur-Baker, Barrow, Aberson, Draper, 2006). Erdur-Baker, Barrow, Aberson, and Draper (2006) have speculated about the dubious nature of the claim that college counseling centers are seeing an increase in presenting concern severity and chronicity, ; however, they note that regardless of the truthfulness of the claim, many counseling center staff are concerned with the issue of increased severity and chronicity. Not being able to concentrate in school is actually a symptom for mental illnesses (Everett). The anxiety, aggravation, restlessness, and lack of concentration make it difficult to excel in school, but it's not just the symptoms that distract a student from learning, but the overall lack of motivation. When a student feels like there's nothing left for them, no one can expect them to care about their grades. In fact, that’s probably the least of their concerns. As it has been proven, students and depression across campuses are becoming more common daily, and it must be taken as a serious matter. There are many causes that result in depression, such as personal stress and academic stress. This severely influences a student’s life and can bring about extreme negative outcomes like suicide or eating disorders. Luckily, there are cures for this major issue. Counseling centers and mentors in the classroom and in residence halls can impact a student’s overall well-being and attitude towards his or her daily life. Depression, in conclusion, is an extremely dangerous mental illness that, if not cured with the correct treatments, could become detrimental to students across the globe.
Emotional and behavioral disorders manifest from various sources. For some children, the core of these disorders is rooted in such factors as “family adversity...poverty, caregiving instability, maternal depression, family stress…marital discord…dysfunctional parenting patterns…abuse and neglect” (Fox, Dunlap & Cushing, 2002, p. 150). These factors are stressors that affect children both emotionally and behaviorally. Students have their educational performance and academic success impeded by such stressors once in school, which creates even more stress as they find themselves frustrated and failing. As a result, problem behaviors may manifest that can be described as disruptive, impulsive, pre-occupied, resistant to change, aggressive, intimidating, or dishonest. Such behaviors may also inflict self-harm.
