We are the sum total of all our experiences and these experiences are thoughts, sensations and judgments stitched together in form of memories. If our memories were to become worse we would start losing the very things that make us unique. Our reactions, which make our personality, are the end result of long experiences with environmental stimuli. With worse memory this store-house of memory will also become small and hence we can expect more fluid personalities which will continuously change in reaction to environmental changes. Also, the range of personalities and characters will become small. Furthermore, our memories of our culture as a whole give us the tools with which we fashion our society. Have you ever wondered what allows us to be aware of the present? It is actually the past! Without knowledge of past information, we would be constantly confused during the present and incapable of almost everything. Hockenbury & Hockenbury (2012) describes memory to be, “…the mental processes that enable us to acquire, retain, and retrieve information”. Without the presence of either of these three processes, the other two would be obsolete. Many experiments have been conducted to better understand these processes and break them down into their basic components.

I. Introduction II. Dementia Senility is a misused term for the loss of ability to think, reason, and remember in older persons. Senility is not a medical condition; it is not normal, natural, or inevitable with aging; it is not limited to older people either. The term senility is replaced in most of my pertinent research by the medical term dementia, which seems to describe a group of symptoms that represent a change or deterioration from an individual's previous level of functioning (Tueth, 1995). Dementia has specific causes, which impair long-term memory and quite relevantly;: language, judgment, spatial perception, behavior, and often personality, interfering with normal social and occupational functioning.
Every intersection, every corner, every doorway has a story, for the stories we tell, the stories we pass on, bear witness to our lives. In 1987, my mother was in her senior year of high school when she entered her school auditorium to listen to a guest speaker. Selene Bruk was a survivor who shared her story about the Holocaust. My mother sat in the front row, engaged in every word this captivating woman spoke with such passion, emotion and conviction. Mrs. Bruk stated that when the Holocaust was over, she wanted to wrap up her experiences, not think, talk or remember it, but she couldn’t, she felt compelled to share her story. Twenty seven years later that very name, Selene Bruk, and her story crossed my path while researching Holocaust survivors. This intersection of sorts was not merely a meaningless accident or coincidence, but rather, a tapestry of events that culminated in a bigger plan, a plan for me to hear and learn the experiences of Mrs. Bruk.
In this study, 13 people have answered “No,” when they were asked if they used any specific memory strategies. There was 10 people that has used the recall and recite method to memorize things, 8 people used word association to try relate materials to something their familiar with. There have been many different models suggested for human memory and many different attempts at defining a specific method of encoding that will lead to greater recall. In this experiment subjects are asked to do a semantic task on a word related to them and an orthographic task in which they analyze the letter in the word. The results of the experiment indicate that the words which where encoded semantically and are related to the self have greater recall.

Imagine having the ability to take a screenshot of what one sees. It sounds like photographic memory, that superhuman ability one often hears about on Dateline or movies and shows. As much as the idea of saving everything one has ever perceived, storing it away like a file in a cabinet, and recalling it at a moment’s notice sounds amazing, it just isn’t plausible. Despite the stories you may have heard from friends, photographic memory is not real. This misconception is often muddled with eidetic memory. Eidetic memory is the ability to recall certain images in great detail for a certain amount of time. The key detail about eidetic memory is that these “snapshots” are not stored forever. They eventually fade over time along with the actual ability itself. In 1964, Haber and Haber, two psychologists, conducted a series of studies on eidetic memory and found a correlation between age and the brain’s capacity for eidetic memory. In their experiments, the children were exposed to a detailed picture on an easel for approximately thirty seconds. When the picture was taken away, the children scanned the blank easel in order to recall the image. They described the image in present tense, as if it was still there (Arnaudo, 2008). Haber and Haber found that although it is relatively rare, eidetic memory occurred more in children, than adults. But upon further research, it appears there is an explanation to its gradual dissipation as one matures. Eidetic memory is more commonly found in children, because as children grow, their brains develop linguistically ,functionally, and associatively.
