Memorable Characters
What makes a character memorable? Memorable characters are present throughout all different types of literature. Usually, most people remember the protagonist or antagonist in the story or play, but there are so many other characters that could be special to the reader. The three characters that are the most memorable from the stories and plays that I read this year are Grandmother in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman, and Walter Lee in A Raisin in the Sun. The Grandmother in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, by Flannery O’Connor, is a memorable character because of her self-proclaimed wisdom, authority over the rest of her family, and the ability to look for the good in people. I previously believed that a tragic hero had to be someone who did something positive that benefited someone or something. Miller’s view of a tragic hero showed that a character that constantly deals with internal conflicts that causes him to live in the past can still be a hero. Willy’s interesting character is always asking his brother, Ben, “What’s the answer? What the character has done in the past does not matter as long as he is willing to sacrifice for the benefit of others. Professor Bauer writes that in Miller’s essay, “Tragedy and the Common Man”, he believes, “all that was required for tragic stature was a hero willing to ‘lay down his life’ to secure ‘his ‘rightful’ position in his society” (Bauer 2). Willy’s character will …show more content…

Despite the character flaws that all three possess, the life lessons that they had to face when presented with different challenges exemplify many beneficial qualities of a “Good Man”. Grandmother’s ability to see the goodness in people allows her to have a more optimistic outlook on the world. Willy Loman’s willingness to sacrifice for the greater good of his family shows that anyone can be a tragic hero regardless of what they did in the past. Lastly, Walter Lee demonstrates how to correctly face adversity when dealing with the pressure from his family and of society. These many favorable qualities demonstrate why the three characters and this Introduction to Literature class will be unforgettable to
