“The Great Melting Pot”
Many times when you live in a certain area you do start to pick up on the other cultures around you. No matter what state you live in there are many cultures blending together. Many people do blend the other cultures of the people around them into their own culture. I’ve lived in many states and was able to experience this first hand. All my friends have all picked up on the culture around them from wither their family or friends. All the time I see the cultures blending together. Even if you try to keep your own culture, the culture around you just sneaks in and you don’t even realize it.
I’ve lived in Texas for more than ten years now; so now I don’t really notice the Mexican culture as I used to. You just drive down any street and can see signs advertising “Tex-Mex” or “Mexican food.” The “Tex-Mex” just shows how much we do integrate the Mexican food in our own food. Many of the menus in these restaurants do have Spanish words on them. Even the decors in these restaurants have Spanish influences. You quickly learn what “El Baño” means.(bathroom) You even have restaurants like Taco Bell and Taco Cabana being nation wide chains. Most of the towns in Texas have more Mexican food restaurants than any other kind. The Hispanic culture is spreading around the country, for instance, Picante is the number one condiment is the United states.
Even our school is integra...
Some of the stereotypes that many Anglos who settled in Texas have about Mexican Americans were that “they were shiftless, lazy, they are dumb, they don’t like to work and they are trying to take your daughter”. These prejudices came from the Southern whites that moved to south Texas.
Can you imagine yourself being apart of a group or lifestyle, now imagine yourself not fitting in. Maybe some people think you’re weird, but people just like you understand. Many suggest that it’s dangerous while others want to join. Whatever the reason may be you still consider yourself apart of society. As you grow older you realize that many people have different backgrounds and maybe even distinct behaviors. When people feel a deep need for love or respect, values and morals may be forgotten. It’s their customs, rituals, and beliefs that make up their own culture.
Every home has its own distinctive requirements, and roofing contractors offer many different services to help keep homes totally free from the elements, and to save owners on repair costs as a long-term solution. This can include repairs, insurance claims and roof inspections. A roof inspection can tackle issues, or perhaps be employed as a completely preventative measure for the peace of mind that the roof is working, and shielding the residence as designed.
The greater overall rate of absorbance change in all chloroplast samples (Figure 1) confirms role of chloroplasts’ in photosynthesis. However, the use of the supernatant sample as a negative control was expected to yield no activity, which was shown to be untrue (Figure 1) and is contributed to the contamination of the supernatant sample with chloroplast. The fragile envelope of the chloroplasts can be eas...
Now, the Mexican Revolution was just a small beginning for the eventual state of Texas. Back in 1809, Texas was just a provenance in the Spanish Empire and its inhabitants were mostly converted Native Americans and people of Spanish descent, but not native born of Spain. The Spanish born people had more rights and were, according to the law, superior to all others. This and more oppression by the Spanish against the Mexicans (i.e. the Native Americans and non-Spanish born), caused an uprising by the common people that was started by a Catholic priest in 1809. It would take 16 more years before Mexico had won its independence from Spain like the US had from Great Britain.
Firstly, one aspect that is both Mexican and American is the cuisine. The original food for Mexico is very spicy and most of the time very colorful as well. Mexicans use spices, peppers, tomatoes, and cheese in many of the native dishes. They use an assortment of meat: pork, beef, lamb, and chicken. When Mexican restaurants spring up in the United States the food is toned down to appeal to Americans. The Mexican Americans use less spices to make the dishes milder rather than the hot, spicy native food. The food, still Mexican, takes on the likeness of American food. This is shown in the United States by all of the Mexican American restaurants such as Taco Bell. Therefore Mexicans have Americanized their food. “For Hispanics live on this side of the border, where Kraft manufactures Mexican-style Velveeta, and where Jack in the Box serves Fajita Pita.” (Rodriguez 131). Americans complement the Mexican style and the inverse.
Texas has a rich and long history and much of it has passed through the state over the years to become a part of its folklore. This Texas folklore is part of many cultures within the state and has even filtered outside the state. The first cultural influence on Texas was from the Paleo-American Indians. When these Indians arrived they were in a bit of a culture shock when they met the Spanish in the 16th century. In the following centuries, more people began to arrive in Texas and they brought new ways of talking, believing and doing things. The Spanish and the Mexican set the patterns south of Nueces and along the Rio Grande. Anglos brought their ways of life from the British Isles to the South and Eastern part of Texas. African Americans who came to work on the plantations on the Brazos and Trinity bottoms brought songs, stories and beliefs that came with them from Africa. Germans came directly from the Old World to the Hill Country, Cajuns came from France and eventually through Louisiana and settled in Southeast Texas. The Dutch, Danes, Polish, Czechs, Norwegians who also came here brought with them their ways of life and they all became bound together to become part of Texas. By the year 2000, Texas was made up of 54.5% Anglos, 31% Hispanic, 11.4% African Americans and another 3.1% of other ethnicities.
Based from the information provided by VanTassel-Baska, et. Al. (2009), gifted and talented students face the same issues as their regular peers but they have different way of viewing these issues and it affects them differently as well. The book discussed different issues that gifted learners face and recommendations on how to address these issues were also available for teachers, administrators and other school personnel. Also, Carol Strip Whitney (2011) in her book entitle Helping Gifted Learners Soar discussed stress as a factor that can distract and overpower anyone including gifted learners and for the gifted learners, there are many reasons and causes of stress. In this reflection, I will focus on two causes of stress, which are gifted learners as social capital and issues related to race and achievement.
The absorption of light in the form of photons through the thylakoid membrane into the lumen is the first step of photosynthesis. This photons absorbed through the lumen go through photochemical reduction in which they are absorbed into pigments such as chlor...
Culture often means an appreciation of the finer things in life; however, culture brings members of a society together. We have a sense of belonging because we share similar beliefs, values, and attitudes about what’s right and wrong. As a result, culture changes as people adapt to their surroundings. According to Bishop Donald, “let it begin with me and my children and grandchildren” (211). Among other things, culture influences what you eat; how you were raised and will raise your own children? If, when, and whom you will marry; how you make and spend money. Truth is culture is adaptive and always changing over time because
The data from the chromatography portion of the experiment showed that the least polar of the pigments would travel the most and the most polar would travel the least; chlorophyll b was the most polar and carotene was the least polar. The spectrophotometric portion of our experiment support this as well by showing us what wavelengths the pigments reflected and absorbed. With any experiment, however, are there sources of error. One source of error with this experiment would include not cleaning the cuvettes before placing them in the spectrophotometer. The smallest fingerprints or particles can lead to an inaccurate transmittance reading. Also, not using the reference cuvette when changing wavelengths is a source of error because it will lead to an inaccurate reading. Sources of error when using the chromatography paper include, too much or too little time for the solvent to ascend up the paper and the possibility that the solvent level may be too high. When studying photosynthetic wavelengths and pigments, it is known that, depending on the plant, some pigments are absorbed during photosynthesis while others are not. Pigments absorb only the light energy that is necessary in carrying out photosynthesis. This knowledge can assist in determining what areas
1980). The way we choose to live is expressed by our well-being but at times when we are unable to accept that we are alone and find a way to be at ease with ourselves, then we at trouble. Such feelings ought to be accepted rather than changed them and that’s how existential an existential psychotherapist helps. We all have the freedom to choose the way we want to live, but however easy this seems to be, it comes with responsibilities. Any challenges we face in life we must take courage and overcome them. The client’s past is not a major concern when taking into consideration the strictly Sartrean perspective of this theory. The choices the client will make in the present and the future are the major concern in searching for a responsible approach in living a free life. However, some aspects of the client’s problem solving methods in the past may be of importance. In order to overcome their anxieties in life, the client must accept some aspects of their lives such as they are not special and living with others is just a coincidence and no destiny (Turner, A,
Existential Therapy (ET) is based on Soren Kierkegaard’s existential philosophy that was developed in the 19th century (Jones & Butman, 2011). Kierkegaard developed existential philosophy as an impartial path to describing reality, focusing on the need for an approach that was more subjectively aimed, without losing the unbiased feature. Friedrich Nietzsche expanded out existentialism by incorporating autonomy, power, and the value of the person (Jones & Butman, 2011). During the 20th century numerous individuals further developed Kierkegaard’s existential philosophy. Martin Heidegger is noted for having a momentous influence on existentialism developing into a therapeutic approach by influencing Binswanger and May, and concepts of authenticity and inauthenticity (Hergenhahn,
The existential approach to therapy has six key propositions: (1) We are able to be self-aware, (2) We need to be responsible for our choices that we make freely, (3) We are allowed to be who we are, (4) Things can always change, (5) Anxiety is a normal feeling, and (6) Death is inevitable (Corey & Corey, 2014). There are different types of existential therapy, but the main purpose remains the same. It is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day stress of life. One could easily forget that they are in control of their actions and reactions. “The aim of therapy is that the patient experiences his existence as real…which includes becoming aware of his
The Holy Spirit is often time defined as the comforter or helper. The Holy Spirit is conveyed as a presence not a mystical being. When I think of the Holy Spirit I see him as not only my comforter or helper but also the one who completes the trinity. The trinity is the divine manifestation of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has strong emotions for us believers. One way the Holy Spirit reacts to us rejecting his help against sin or simply rebelling is by him being grieved. Ephesians 4:30 reads “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” The sins we commit brings mourning to the Holy Spirit.
