The choice of a medical specialty is a career-defining decision with several implications for both students and the health care system. While medical schools worldwide are constantly producing new graduates, resulting in the phenomenon of “overproduction” of doctors, the medical specialty distribution remains unequal. So an improved understanding of the reasons and factors associated with the choice of medical career paths is important for the planning of effective intervention strategies according to the real necessities of healthcare systems. It is recognized that beyond personality characteristics, demographic factors and experiences during medical school, the medical curriculum influences the specialty choice to a great extent.

This work is divided into two sections. In the first, I will discuss some major principles of PBL, alongside with a consideration of its advantages and disadvantages. There were three studies demonstrating a positive association between the PBL and medical career choice. The first study was a randomized controlled trial performed by Peters et al. (2000) at Harvard Medical School. They recruited 100 medical students that were randomly assigned to either a PBL curriculum or a traditional curriculum. The results of this study showed a significant association between medical specialty choice and PBL curriculum. The authors demonstrated that a higher proportion of 22% graduates from the PBL curriculum were working in either primary care or psychiatry compared to graduates from traditional curricula. Another large retrospective cohort study including 2469 students from two Australian medical schools found that the vast majority of physicians from a PBL curriculum were indeed working in primary care or psychiatry compared to traditional curriculum physicians. In support of the above, a third retrospective cohort study at the New Mexico School of Medicine investigated the self-reported student interest in specific specialties and if these interest changes throughout medical school between a PBL and a traditional curriculum. With many medical careers students often get confused on what they really want to study, I have faced this problem myself and I know is not that easy due too many choices. There are many options ranging from healthcare to medical jobs. I have thoughtfully chosen to enter the program for Medical Assistant (MA). Ever since I was a child, I’ve spent most of childhood years at the Hospital, I was diagnosed with a rare condition that had to be treated continuously, this meant that I had to be going to checkups every three months so I was close to doctors, surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologist, medical assistants, etc. I remember at first I was frightened just of the thought of going to the doctor but after a few visits I got used to. The doctors and nurses were nice and caring and made me feel comfortable that I end up enjoying my doctor’s visits every time. Since then I decided I wanted to work in the medical field, this is my goal since I can remember. I have always enjoyed helping people in any way I possibly can. I chose to be a Medical Assistant because I think is great way to start my medical career going and programs are practical and not long.
I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. First I would like to state that any career in a medical field takes a lot of dedication and many hours studying and it is not for everyone. I would also like to say once an individual has made a career out of it the job has long hours and can be very stressful, so I suggest readers to not consider a career in medicine unless you are genuinely interested in the work, and are not in it just for the money.

Choosing a major has never been an easy task; after high school graduation, without a college plan, many of us finds ourselves taking classes we don’t even need in the first year of college. Setting aside some times to decide what we want to do in life, what we want to study, and where we want to be in the next five years or so can help us save time, money, and most likely can direct us toward our most coveted career goal. Changing our mind along the way is typical of us, but there are always many majors to choose from; but when it comes to the healthcare field, not every single one of us interested in healthcare as a profession gets to wear the white coat or the scrub because some of us hate the sight of blood and needles. These people may consider healthcare administration as a career, but is it worth it to choose healthcare administration as a career?
I always want a career in the medical field but I never know in which field I should concentrate, after visiting the MSF website I was able to narrow it down. The website was full of information about the organization and I was able to choose a career off the website. My main goal is to work with them so I can make a different in my community or country but also individual around the world that needs help. It’s been more than five years since I choose that career. although I use to think about changing it now I more than focus to achieve my goal. The rest of the doctors are in medical specialties which include obstetrics, gynecology, general surgery, and psychiatry. In the 1980’s managed care has arisen and policymakers became worried the United States was not training a sufficient amount of primary care doctors. Success was in the hands of these physicians. The physicians were told to act as the gatekeepers to keep to more costly specialized medicine. In 1986 Congress made the Council on Graduate Medical Education.
In order to determine whether or not clinical medicine was the right career for me, I started shadowing Dr. Richard Turner in the ER. Through my experiences with him, I learned that medicine is a problem solving process. As I watched, he would take a patient's history and try to piece together the correct diagnosis by deciding which scenarios were more likely than others. I was attracted by the dynamic nature of each patient's diagnosis and the necessity for an open mind. My hobby of flying has taught me to look at everything in life with a new perspective and to assess the situation from as many angles as possible. Watching Dr. Turner has confirmed my perception of a medical career and the nature of the work involved. Since I love puzzles and problems, the problem solving aspect also increased my desire to become a physician.
Health care would be a great career option for almost anyone because one can help a multitude of different people. Health care includes many well paying jobs and the field is growing rapidly, so job security is promising. Not choosing health careers would be a missed opportunity because there are many promising benefits in the field.
Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. I planed to utilize my assets, namely my problem- solving affinity, strong work ethic, and interpersonal commitment, to craft a stimulating, personally rewarding career in medicine. I have taken stock of myself, considering my skills, experiences, and goals. I have looked to family and friends, some of whom are doctors, for advice. Because of this self-examination, I have decided to pursue a career in health care. The process has been difficult at times but always illuminating. Throughout it all, I have never lost confidence - the confidence that I will actively absorb all available medical knowledge, forge friendships with fellow students, and emerge from my training as a skilful and caring physician.

As a child I had always been interested in medicine and the medical world. My passion of learning about the human body started when I was younger. I encountered many health problems throughout my toddler years. I looked up to the doctors and medical staff around me and continue to look up to them, they were and are still my heros.
