When I was much younger, I spent my daytime hours watching medical documentaries, dramatized ER shows, and Grey's Anatomy on television. By the age of four, I already made my decision to pursue a career in medicine. I find the human body absolutely fascinating and beautiful in all states. I want to learn and memorize everything there is to know about it; every vein, bone, and artery. Also, I want to know about all the abnormalities that can develop in the human body. At the same time, I also get great joy out of helping others. Since I am an ambitious person with a strong stomach, I specifically want to become a surgeon. Chemistry is the branch of science that studies how matter is composed, their properties, how it combines and changes with others; and how these processes form new substances. There are many branches of chemistry including, but not limited to: organic chemistry, biochemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and analytical chemistry. The courses of chemistry that are required before entering medical school are inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. Inorganic chemistry discusses and covers topics of bonding, the structure of molecules, energetics, equilibrium, and chemical reactivity. The study of inorganic chemistry is used as a foundation for the study of biological chemistry. In inorganic chemistry, the class covers the basics that are further elaborated in organic and biological chemistry.
Organic chemistry is also needed to understand biochemistry. This course is the study of carbon compounds, and talks about the synthesis, identification, modeling, and chemical reactions of those compounds. Thanks to science, I will have plenty of options to choose from once I graduate from medical school. I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. I have always been inspired by the workings of chemistry and mathematics. My studies of these subjects have developed my understanding and have made me pursue my interest in these two topics. I want to take up chemistry as it involves a large amount of mathematics which I value and understand to be challenging, yet very enjoyable, as there is always an alternative route to obtain the answer. Additionally, I am drawn to the course because it is a mixture of all these exacting subjects, forming a degree that is very demanding and stimulating. Chemists are constantly thinking of new ways to produce viable drugs containing different isomers to improve the pharmaceutical sector using mathematical equations. Chemistry is about innovation, applying information to new areas and how to do things better than they were before, the degree appeals to and fascinates me.
As far back as I can remember I had a strong affinity for science. I recall having an avid curiosity in biology and chemistry while I attended catholic school. Our congregation placed an emphasis on missionary work and social service, and growing up I felt very connected to that experience. Medicine as a profession was something I was exposed to early on as many of my family members are physicians. I became even more interested in medicine when as a teenager my dad became critically ill and I wanted desperately to know what was happening and what needed to be done to get him better.
In order to determine whether or not clinical medicine was the right career for me, I started shadowing Dr. Richard Turner in the ER. Through my experiences with him, I learned that medicine is a problem solving process. As I watched, he would take a patient's history and try to piece together the correct diagnosis by deciding which scenarios were more likely than others. I was attracted by the dynamic nature of each patient's diagnosis and the necessity for an open mind. My hobby of flying has taught me to look at everything in life with a new perspective and to assess the situation from as many angles as possible. Watching Dr. Turner has confirmed my perception of a medical career and the nature of the work involved. Since I love puzzles and problems, the problem solving aspect also increased my desire to become a physician.
Your body has about 10 systems that work together to complete a human being. This is studied by a branch of biology called anatomy. Anatomy is the study of body structures of humans, animals, and other living organisms. There are different types of anatomy like human anatomy, zootomy anatomy (animal), and phytotomy anatomy (plant) (Nordqvist, Christian, “What Is Anatomy?”). Students who plan to become part of the medical field are required to take anatomy along with biochemistry. Biochemistry is the study of chemical reactions inside the body. Doctors, pharmacists, and physicians are required to take many other biology and chemistry classes, but anatomy and biochemistry are the two major subjects studied to join the medical field. Without these courses a doctor, a pharmacist, or a physician would not know the basics of a human structure, the reactions and acids inside a human’s body. To become part of the medical field it is mandatory to study anatomy and have knowledge of each of the systems along with biochemistry.
There are are many different careers in the medical world, my favorite being a pediatrician. I have always loved being around little kids and making them laugh which is one of the main reasons why I want to be a pediatrician. I’ve wanted to be a pediatrician since I was 11 years old; many of my friends would laugh because they didn’t think I was capable of becoming a doctor, but like my mom says “when you want something, don’t give up until you have it”. A pediatrician is a doctor who treats infants,children, and young adults. They diagnose and treat diseases, injuries and much more(asthma, allergies,etc). But being a pediatrician requires so much dedication and hard work , and I know it’s not going to be easy but I’m willing to do it.

Medicine appeals to me as a humanistic, challenging field that offers an opportunity to help people in the most vital aspect of their lives; their health. Medicine has passionately appealed to me from my early childhood. I come from a family of doctors. My father, who is my role model, taught me two important aspects in the field of medicine: To reduce suffering & do no harm to patients. With this strong foundation, as my basis and support, entrance into a rural medical school was out of fascination for the intricate human architecture and its functioning. Being constantly in touch with the field of medicine through my father and other fellow doctors and through 6 years of medical school and rotations, I realized that Internal Medicine has evolved as mother of all branches. That is what sparked my interest in pursing a career in Internal Medicine.

I am currently taking Maths, Chemistry and Biology to Advanced Higher, all of which are challenging and stimulating subjects. They have all influenced me in different ways and were integral in my decision to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering. They have also helped me obtain a foundation of core skills and extended knowledge to hopefully prepare me undertaking my desired degree. There is no doubt that Maths and chemistry have helped fine tune and advance my problem solving skills and think in a more logical manner, all of which I believe to be essential for this degree.
