This article compares media multitasking among Malaysian and American college students. Malaysia is a growing Asian economy, and Malaysians are said to be heavy users of multimedia technology, according to the Malaysian English local newspapers. Both Malaysians and Americans media multitask or task switch in high levels. Media multitasking have been associated with impulsivity, distraction, inattention, and lower academic performance. The study answers three questions on the relationship between media and multitasking, the relationship between media multitasking and distractibility and impulsivity, and the difference in usage of media while studying among American and Malaysian college students. The PCA results divided the various media multitasking while studying into IMing while studying, emailing while studying, and social networking while studying. According to the PCA results, Malaysian students showed a positive significance by social networking while studying and texting while studying, and the American students showed a positive significance by social networking while studying only. The American students had more phone calls during a typical day, and a greater distractibility for academic reading. However, Malaysian students reported more media usage during a typical week, and IMed more frequently for longer periods of time. Malaysians reported engaging in more emailing and IMing while studying in comparison to Americans; Malaysian college students use the Internet while studying for non-academic purposes. The authors hypothesizes that cell phone use and the degree of comfort using cell phones in class has a negative correlation to academic performance. One hundred and eighteen undergraduate university students between the ages 18 to 39 years participated in the study. Social-media is flourishing, reality TV show ratings are going up, and humans even unintentionally check their phones every two minutes. In this day of age, multi-tasking is proving to promote inefficiency rather than productivity.
In the article,“Multitasking is actually kind of a problem for kids and adults” by Hayley Tsukayama the author went into detail about how parents and their children view their personal media habits. One of the ways that the parents and children viewed their media habits as was feeling the need to respond to texts and notifications immediately. “More than 1,200 parents and teens surveyed, 48 percent of parents and 72 percent of teens said they felt the need to respond to texts and notifications immediately, almost guaranteeing distractions throughout the day” (Tsukayama). This article can be connected to “The Epidemic of Media Multitasking While Learning” both of the articles discussed the different factors of media multitasking among individuals. The article from The Washington Post website gave great insight on multitasking and rather it is bad for students when it comes to learning. I believe that the issue being discussed is very relevant because if students are easily distracted by technology while in their learning environment it results in them not learning
Today in the Twenty-First century we have surpassed many technological advancements and excelled far past what we would have ever thought. One of our greatest technological advancements is the thing we hold in our hands everyday, our cell phones. Sometimes we don't realize just how much our phones can distract us from our lives. As a generation glued to our phones us teenagers send an average of 3,339 texts per month. In Randy Cohen's essay, “When texting is wrong” he states how we are overcome by texting and how it damages our social and personal lives.
Technology is prevalent in our personal and professional lives. Everywhere we go; there are multiple screens and multiple distractions. How is productivity when being inundated with information and devices? There seems to be some bragging rights associated with multitasking, however many would argue the opposite. The following examines how multitasking negatively influences personal and professional productivity and how we should make changes to reduce digital distractions.

She shows that often with multitasking, people tend to lose focus, lack work quality, have an increase in stress, and in the end she gives a solution to all these problems. There has always been controversy as to teens not being able to concentrate and focus because of texting and cell phone use. Visiting any U.S. high school can show the lack of concentration and focus of students caused by using their phones. Benefits of having a cell phone can have the advantage of reporting crimes as they happen, handling an emergency, and always being connected with friends and family; however there are drawbacks such as reducing concentration, having poor grades, and causing an accident while the driver is using his phone.
