Written essay The subject I have chosen to write this essay on is ‘Media bias’. Media bias is where a journalist leans to one side of an argument rather than staying neutral with the subject in hand; throughout all media forms, this has become the norm. In this paper I will develop two arguments supporting each side of media bias. The two sides of an argument I will portray in this essay are; if all media forms are biased in some way or if some have a completely unbiased ideology. The first argument supporting my ‘all news is biased in some way’ point is the news announcements that ‘Daily Star’ and ‘Daily Express’ publish. A good example of how news is biased is the multiple news reports on Nigella Lawson’s drug abuse; some being much more biased than others. The Daily Star’s take on Nigella Lawson’s drug taking is biased in the sense that they are on the courts side of the argument. This is suggested by the lead paragraph I have pulled from their article; [NIGELLA LET KIDS SMOKE CANNABIS. 2013. Daily Star, 14th December, p. 7]. “COCAINE-shame telly chef Nigella Lawson let her and Charles Saatchi’s children smoke cannabis at home, a court heard yesterday.” This portrays a biased view because it isn’t viewing it from Nigella’s side of the story, instead it is just pointing out that she has been taking drugs, it also seems to be making fun of her. The Daily Express on the other hand has a fairly unbiased view on the whole Nigella situation. This is shown in the lead paragraph of the report [Chapman, J. 2013. Nigella let children take cannabis, says assistant. Daily Express, 14th December, p. 7.] “NIGELLA Lawson let her children smoke cannabis while bags of cocaine were left around the chef’s home, a court heard yesterday.” This... ... middle of paper ... ...n drugs'.
