There are three variations of newspaper genre – the quality (e.g independent), popular (e.g the sun) and middle (Metro). There are also genres which exist in broadcast news for example news which is broadcasted by BBC news, ITV, Channel 4. Entertainment news which is broadcasted usually by MTV news and many more. Broadcast news have different news channels which focus only on the genre they specialise in. However, newspaper are based on publishing news which has different genre but they specialise more on one specific genre. For example, the sun. The sun newspaper specialises mainly on entertainment and celebrity gossips. This means that, they have rich information on the news about entertainment that they provide, but brief information on the news such as sports which they do not specialise well on.
Genre can affect the audience of the newspaper because certain audience are appealed to certain genre. For example, as the sun’s genre is based on entertainment and celebrity gossips, this means that, they focus on the genre that their audience expects to get from them. This therefore implies that, genre can affect the newspaper because in order to have audience who are interested in their newspaper, they need to meet the interest and expectation of the audience. It is also the same with broadcast news. Certain news channel such as Sky sports only report on news which has got to do with sports as their aim is to appeal to a certain viewer.
Moreover, TV news is viewed more since 24 hour news channels are now available to watch. Whereas with newspapers, you’d have to wait till the next morning to view all the headlines. This competition between different platforms does matter as they would be competitive towards what they show to gain ...

Also, if they cannot report the news for example, about the death of Nelson Mandela, then the viewers will go to a different broadcaster or look up to newspaper to provide information for them. Nevertheless, if they did not make profit, they would not be able to afford to go to the place and broadcast the information from there. Also, newspapers are mostly funded through advertisement. It is essential for newspapers to be funded as well so they can stay open and stay competitive, the same reason why broadcast news need to make profit.
Overall, platform does affect the content because once a newspaper publishes a story, it can’t be changed or updated till the next day. However, Broadcasted news can always update their news as it runs 24 hours and they also give an in-depth information on the news they are providing
