Freedom, a word with a wide range of meaning, for some it is the ability to speak their mind for others it is to be able to drive and be on their own. Even though freedom is such a universal word, it is a word with rich and ample history. The meaning of this word spans from the enlightenment to the colonization of others all the way to current day injustices. The background and significance of freedom are shown through primary sources such as the document the “Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen”, the poem “White Man's Burden”, the movie “Hotel Rwanda”, the book Just Mercy, and the website Freedomhouse.org. These sources help indicate that the world is more free than it has been, but with such drastic advancements in technology and thought it has the opportunity to be more so. In the 1300’s the world started to change, people started to think differently and question their circumstances. From this questioning of the everyday, came questioning of the church. The effects from imperialism lasted long after the imperialist withdrew from the imperialised state, for example when Belgium, who were notorious for their cruel treatment of natives, imperialized Rwanda they put one tribe of native people in power over the other. The Belgian officials chose the tribe called tutsi who had “more caucasian looking” features over the Hutu tribe. In the 1960s when the Belgian government withdrew from the country, tensions rose between the two tribes, which eventually led to mass violence. Showcased in the 1994 movie “Hotel Rwanda” about the Rwandan Genocide when the Hutu got revenge on the Tutsi for how the Hutu were treated when Belgium was in power by slaughtering hundreds of Tutsi.
