Do you chew your food with your mouth open? Have you ever ran away from the cops? Have you ever bought clothes from the opposite gender section? Are you a minor and drink at a parties? If you said yes to any of these things you are what we call deviant. Cue the dark music and police sirens. If you got scared take a moment and laugh a bit, do not worry no one is coming after you, just yet that is. This label deviant probably makes you feel a certain type of negative emotion, especially if you visualize yourself as one who follows the rules. You would not be wrong to think the word deviant has a negative connotation, because most people imagine deviance as anything against the law. However, deviance can include chewing your food with your mouth open; or not drinking, because you are underage, but everyone else is. You are probably asking yourself now, but wait if I am following the law and everyone else is not “why am I the deviant one?” Your deviant in the fact that you are not doing what is considered normal in the location you are at. You are doing what is against the action people around you are doing, making you the deviant in that social experience. Data showed that the social control for Hello as a greeting and goodbye as a closure is positively reinforced. With particularly females, wanting to keep the norm and not deviate from what occurs in life. I believe that had Nicole and Hager greeted people improperly to strangers, the outcome would have probably be less conclusive and more accepting because when greeting strangers normally there is less emotion that is presented to the second person.
