In our modern world, sociology has a tremendous impact on our culture, mainly through the processes and decisions we make everyday. For movies and television shows especially, sociological references are incorporated throughout the storyline. A movie which includes many sociological examples is Mean Girls. Mean Girls is a movie based on the life of home-schooled teenage girl, Cady Heron, who moves to the United States from Africa and is placed in a public school for the first time. Cady finds herself in many uncomfortable scenarios and has to deal with the trials and tribulations pertaining to everyday high school issues. The elements of the bureaucracy provide a way to relate to the groups to one another. The clear division of labor ensures that each individual has a specialized task without crossover work between people or groups. The ‘plastics’ group, which consists of three people, establishes a specific group goal for each day, whether it be complimenting an outfit or ridiculing a person. The explicit rules are documented concerning the plastics such as ‘we only wear pink on Wednesdays,’ but they do change based on Regina George’s mood throughout the movie. The group also explains how they can only wear their hair up one day a week; if they do not abide by that rule then they cannot sit at ‘the plastic’s’ lunch table because it is a privilege. Lastly Regina takes charge of her group by assigning the members who they can and cannot talk to due to social status. Feminism is evident throughout the typical gender stereotypes such as the ‘perfect’ girls are the blonde, skinny ones. When students are asked about their thoughts on ‘the plastics’ in the beginning of the movie, they tell that they are preppy and attractive. The stereotypes in this movie cause hurt feelings and discrimination towards all of the females. Girls were also viewed as sex symbols based on their looks and physical appearance, not their ability and intelligence. In the movie, most of the girls are known for copying ‘the plastics’ look which is usually short skirts and tank tops making the outfit look provocative. Another example is on Cady’s first day of highschool, she is asked if ‘her muffin is buttered’ which is a sexual question.
