May Day is a powerful international event that has influenced so many changes toward labor rights. On May 1st, a lot of different countries celebrate with their own taste in culture. That can be shown as walkouts, protests, or even parades. Plenty of the counties in Central America on this day use parades to represent. In the United States, specifically the bay area, we march and protest the idea of workers' rights. Many cities such as San Francisco, Oakland, Hayward, Concord, San Jose, and many more unite to honor workers. I read two articles that explain two different views on the May Day event. This impacted a majority of people of color, starting from the Chinese workers to Black workers to Latino workers especially undocumented workers. Chinese people were one of the first groups to come to the United States to start working. This reminded about the transcontinental railroad that the Chinese workers constructed. Also, they worked in the mining industry which lead to racial discrimination towards that group. African Americans had to deal with slavery, which impacted the country's economy and on how African Americans could contribute as workers in the future. The Jim Crow era was a very impacting event in the states because it enforced racial discrimination. They have torn away from their rights, beat down, and also killed by owners. The Latino community has done a lot of their people. We see events such as the Chicano Movement that was for Chicano students who were being racially discriminated in schools to labor rights. In the community that I live in, the marches and protests are made up a majority of Latinx people. Latinos especially those who are undocumented in this country have been discriminated in workplaces. They have had no rights for better quality conditions. Plenty of the environments that Latinos have worked in, especially women, have been the cause of the health issues that they have
