Maturity: A Self Journey No matter what religion, age, or gender someone is, it is inevitable that at some point an individual has been spitefully told to “grow up”. Essentially, it is viewed as a straightforward phrase for “get over yourself”, ultimately informing someone that an action they have done does not reflect their expected maturity for their age. However, contrary to popular belief, age does not necessarily play a factor in maturity. What is maturity? Well, maturity could mean a lot of various things. There is physical maturity, which describes how one should develop as he or she ages, maturity in judgement, ethics and morality, relationships, and so on. While viewing another person, it may seem simple to determine whether that person is considered “mature”. Although, when it comes to the individual him-or-herself, it may be more difficult to determine due to the amount of influences he or she need to weigh in on. Examples of maturity may include approaching things with a spirit of humility, decision making based on character rather than feelings, consistent gratitude, and that being an “adult” does not truly exist. Of course, these are just a few examples listed, as the factors that determine maturity are endless. It simply means that an individual knows what is appropriate and what is not. As one learns to mature, one discovers the importance of caring for others, while also caring for oneself. People experience maturity in different ways, and each individual discovers his-or-her own pace. It is not a race to see what life has to provide, but a personal journey to discover the important things in life and to take one’s time. There is no rush to maturity as it is not something one can simply gain as he or she grows older, but it’s something one works toward in life. Something that requires constant effort, for one to learn from their mistakes and understand what went wrong and where. Growing older may give an individual more time to make their mistakes and to learn the lesson that life provides, but it does not guarantee anyone’s
