Every day when you ride in your car and look at buildings and cross over bridges you are looking at the work of engineers. Even the roads you drive on are the work of engineers. The ability to create, design, and build structures that takes an application of scientific, economic, social, practical, and most of all mathematical skills is what defines an engineer. There are many different fields of engineering that go beyond the main braches which are mechanical, chemical, civil, and electrical engineering. The one constant that you will notice in every field of engineering is the factor of mathematical skills that are needed. Engineering has existed since the Ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome in Europe and even the Aztecs and Incas …show more content…
More than ever, engineers are now required to have knowledge of mathematics for their design projects. Engineers weigh different design choices on their merits and choose the solution that best fits the requirements. Engineers also create an appropriate mathematical model of a problem that allows them to analyze it, test potential solutions. They also typically attempt to predict how well their designs will perform to their specifications prior to full-scale production. They use prototypes, scale models, simulations, destructive tests, and stress tests to make sure their products will perform as they expected. To become an engineer you must have a high school diploma and a bachelor's degree in engineering and have a excellent background in many academic areas including mathematics. The mathematic courses such as algebra, calculus, geometry, and trigonometry all should be easily navigated by an inspiring engineer. Currently there are over 1.5 million engineers employed throughout the United States. Many different industries employ engineers, but most engineers are employed in manufacturing or for companies that provide professional, scientific, or technical
The contemporary world is full of marvels. Technological advances have enabled mankind to fly in the heavens, instantaneously communicate with distant relatives thousands of miles away, construct buildings that are able to withstand many natural disasters, cure deadly diseases, and even travel to and study areas beyond the confines of planet Earth. While there are many factors that contributed to man’s ability to overcome what many once thought were impossible feats, it is the study of engineering that has enabled one to study the elements and leverage all that they have to offer. Mathematics lies at the heart of all science, including engineering. Without progressions in mathematical concepts, engineering principles and applications would not have advanced as quickly as they have throughout history.
There are various types of engineering that make the world the way it is. The engineering field is a huge necessity to the world. The field provides a sense of infrastructure and stability to anywhere and everywhere, and without engineers, the world would pretty much fall apart. Lots of people assume that engineering only has to deal with the environment and the external structures that make up where we live, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Other types of engineering include the makeup of the body, and the function of the specific internal organs. This is when we land on the field of biomechanics. The purpose of biomechanics is to study the function and the movement of the human body. This engineering field is very important because
The word engineer comes from the latin word ingeniare. ingeniare means construct or craftsmanship. Ever since the beginning of time we have had engineers. Engineering is the combination of math and science , solving world problems to help better the world around us. Being an engineer takes a lot of knowledge, creativity, and hard work. A typical engineer can clearly see a problem and is capable of fining a solution. A senior engineer or engineering manager usually doesnt do as much technical work, but usally lot of managing. Some of the first official engineers were military engineers. They were employed by the goverment to build such things as roads, bridges, and weapons. US mililary Academy at Westpoint was the first school to offer an education in enginnering. Engineering is a very broad field. Engineers are always at a high demand, we could never have enough brilliant minds making the world better. Engineers are needed everywhere. Engineering managers have to have a bachelor's degree or higher, they usually direct and seek solutions to problems and are sometimes called executi...
My decision to become an electrical engineer was not a decision I took too long ago. It is something that I decided to pursue when I entered a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) high school. It was then that I realized how much I enjoyed working with computers and building circuits, and the fact that this career involved many subjects. Doing a lot of research to understand better what it meant to be an Electrical Engineer, I found out that in order to succeed in this career one had to know a little bit of everything. In other words, subjects such as science and math are essential to know if someone wants to be successful electrical engineer. An electrical engineer is someone who finds practical solutions to everyday problems that involve electricity, such as computers, cell phones, among other electrical equipments. In order to create a useful device one must know where to start and this is where science comes in. An electrical engineer must be able to use the scientific method, which means; one must form a procedure, test it out, and write a conclusion. These parts of the scientific method must be written clearly, so that others can recreate and test out a device or project. Math also plays a key role in this area of study, because one must be precise when creating a new device that others are going to use. For example, if one were to create a new type of cell phone one must know a lot of math in order to be able to progr...
The term multi-disciplinary can be defined as the study of a single major topic with several branches of other disciplines. Nowadays, due to highly mobile and dissimilar society, profession changes are in routine. A number of studies have indicated that, after 10 years of work, perhaps as many as 80% of graduates have jobs with little or no direct relationship to their undergraduate majors [1]. Through the multidisciplinary studies program, students have the freedom to direct their studies in any one of several directions, gaining the versatility and flexibility so important in a changing environment [1]. The concept start the need is become more significant that required more knowledge together with other fields, computer competency is a common example. Students regardless of their major such as Fine Arts, Engineering, Medical, Geology, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Foreign Language, Social Sciences, Leadership and Religion must require computer skills. Similarly, different engineering majors are also combined in the execution of several projects. In this essay some of major disciplines are discussed by combining other engineering, medical and fine art disciplines to highlight the need of studying multidisciplinary with aspects of engineering field.
Engineers are valuable assets to any company because they think analytically. Engineers may advance to become technical specialists or to supervise a staff or team of engineers and technicians. Some eventually become engineering managers or enter other managerial or sales jobs.
During the 19th century engineering grew as a new subject and engineers saw their careers soar high whole working independently or working for large organisations. The United States of America laid the foundation for the American Society of Civil Engineers; American Society of Mechanical Engineers;
Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to construct innovative designs using natural resources to benefit mankind. Mechanical engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the design and use of machines. Mechanical engineer’s main objective is to take a product from an idea to the marketplace. In other words, they create and plan the idea on paper, design the idea so it can sell, and then ensure that the machine functions safely and efficiently. It requires a vast amount of skills and knowledge to design these machines. Some examples of skills would be; understanding the forces and thermal environment a product may soon encounter, analyzing, and designing objects
* Engineers must be able to work as part of a team. The ability to
Electrical Engineers research, develop, design, and test electronic components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, medical, military, and scientific applications (Cosgrove 749). They are concerned with devices that use small amounts of electricity that make up electronic components such as integrated circuits and microprocessors. By applying principles and techniques of electronic engineering they design, develop, and manufacture products such as computers, telephones, radios, and stereo systems (EGOE, 121). Electrical engineers touch everyone lives through the things they have designed or created. Electrical engineers have invented the lights in your house, the television, the stereo, the telephone, computers, and even your doctor’s blood pressure gauge (Stine 300).
Civil engineering is a very demanding yet fulfilling career, as the engineer is able to work on a project from its inception right to its completion. When you drive over a bridge, see a building, fly out of an airport, or visit a museum, a civil engineer has had a major part in that
An aeronautical engineer typically has a bachelor’s degree, this degree is the minimum. It doesn't matter if you have a degree better than a bachelor's you can obtain masters and doctoral degrees, which is what most job places are looking for.. You will need to take two examinations for four years of credit, which is around two hundred forty credits. One credit is equivalent to a study load of 25-30 hours. Some good colleges for aeronautical engineering are the California Institute of Technology, which is the number one aeronautical college. The next schools of the top five colleges are Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of Michigan Ann Harbor, and finally Georgia Institute of Technology.
In the most basic sense, engineering means “making things happen.” It is the practical application of science and math, the two subjects I am most passionate about, to solve everyday problems. It opens up a world of opportunity to create innovative technology that influences many aspects of people’s lives, this giving an individual the power to make a difference. While I am deeply interested in the subjects that are the foundation of engineering, in addition I have many other personal reasons for pursuing civil engineering in specific. I am motivated by my desire to fulfill my lifelong goal of creating purposeful infrastructure, to make all of my family proud, and to prove that not all engineers
With the use of geometry and calculus, biomedical engineers can use those tools to develop designs and systems. For instance, when engineers design artificial hearts, they use higher-level math, such as related rates from calculus, to consider the rate of pumping blood in and out of the heart. When talking with Ms. Mousley, she also explained distinct characteristics of mathematicians such as paying close attention to detail, thinking logically, being a good communicator and write, and also being persistent. These are also qualities of engineers which is why I think there’s a parallel between mathematics and engineering. They both think alike and as a result, they tend to approach problems in the same manner which is why I think minoring in math could help me develop the mental skill-set of an
The profession of civil engineering originates along way back time. It is dated way back between 4000 and 2000 B.C. in ancient
