The mind and body problem has been one of the hottest topics that keep receiving the attention of the Philosophers. It is one of the debates if whether which one is physical and which one is mental. One of the toughest questions for us to answer has always been if are we a mind or a body, or are we both the same entity? The group of people who kept arguing about which one is which are the Dualists and the Materialists. The Dualists believed that the mind is separated from the body while the Materialists only believed in physical matter.
In substance dualism, Descartes is trying to create a strong claim that our mind is divided from our body, including the brain, the bones, and hands, are all diversified from the mind. First and …show more content…

His theory is also showing that the Substance Dualism is being an example of folk psychology. When he explained folk psychology, he is trying to show that all what is happening is just a bunch of belief or theory with no scientific evidence (Paul Churchland, page 288-289) and Descartes’ Substance Dualism is also the same point. While eliminative materialism has numerous different explanations and evidence of what is happening inside of our brain. For example, if you’re having a headache, you might feel particular pain and pressure inside your brain and most likely you will feel ill throughout the whole day. Another argument against Descartes’ Substance Dualism would be if the mind and body are separate, how come they still interact? When Descartes expounded his theory, he gave little to no evidence if the mind and body are indeed separated. While modern science, like neuroscience, gave every specific clarification of how the brain functions, makes every clear-cut hypothesis, gave us a greater scientific interpretation and explained how the molecules of, in our brain works. For example, if our brain tells us to swing our arm, neurons from our brain would transfer around the body and make our arm swing. As for Descartes, he only sounded like he is just droning random ideas for his Substance Dualism argument, since our thoughts are easily damaged by mechanisms such as amnesia, brain damage and trauma. A final argument against Descartes’ Substance Dualism is his Cogito Ergo Sum argument (Rene Descartes, page 159-161). When he stated that he’s a thinking thing, that means he exists, what if he stopped thinking even for just a one second? Would he
