Master of Science in Social Work 1. Motivation for social service and/or social justice, social work education, and a career in the profession During my undergraduate work, I deepened my knowledge in how the needs of individuals, their systems, and society as a whole are interrelated. Through this intellectual pursuit, I’m grateful for the opportunity to have expanded my learning and to grow personally. After graduation I began to understand that a gap exists between my calling to deliver care and support to those in need and the lack of employment opportunities available to me not having a master’s degree. Early in my career, I desire to begin serving in an interpersonal, direct care position with hopes to transition one day to advocating for these groups on a large scale using the information I obtained by serving those needs firsthand. I am convinced this program would prepare me for a fruitful future in social work where I can meet this goal due to the long history of excellence, research informed approach, and clear commitment to the service of marginalized and oppressed groups. In addition, I believe that not only would this program provide the proper training, but it could make these goals attainable through the online course delivery and affordable cost. I have seen this most clearly when the “self” aspect is disregarded by those who have the power to sway or determine the outcome of my situation. As a child, people would often focus on the issues, both physical and emotional, that they assumed would come with my having a disability, rather than the ones I lacked a vocabulary to articulate at the time. This transference often affected the assistance that I received. As a young adult, this aspect of “self-determination” is still unintentionally attempted to be stolen by those who do not trust me to accurately determine my own abilities and boundaries. This occurs at an organizational level.
