I believe in what Albert Einstein concerned, “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.” Modern technology is used in everywhere, and every day we are influenced by it. We conveniently use computers or smart phones to find out information that we want to know. However, it does not give us only information that we need, but it also gives us lots of subconscious influences by using the mass media. For instance, when I open up a web site, I can easily find commercial advertisements on the side of the web pages or in the middle of the articles. Technology is no longer the tools for our convenient only, but also it becomes a resource of mass media.
Nowadays it is easy to spot people who are exposed by mass media in form of social networking. For example, restaurants are used to be the places where people are gathered with friends and families to chat, but recently people sit around the table together but are not interact to each other. People are busy to check and chat through their social network such as Facebook and Twitter. Mass media is continuously evolving and developing every second. It has been developed much that it tries to brainwash the audiences. Its use of repetitive melody and funny lyrics are one of the strategies they use. In the article Mind Over Mass Media, Steven Pinker claims that the use of technology enhances our intelligence, despite what critics say, when used in productive ways. Pinker supports his claim by explaining that if electronic media were hazardous to intelligence, the quality of science would be plummeting and that philosophy, history and cultural criticism, are flourishing will the use of the Web. The author’s purpose is persuade readers that new media is allowing mankind to locate information at a faster rate, in order to prevent readers from believing that technology is hurting us. Ray Bradbury states “We bombard people with sensation. That substitutes for the thinking.” I agree with this statement because with all the technology and entertainment the 21st century offers where has the thinking and investigating gone? In his book Fahrenheit 451, his words manifest a horrible time where important writings from philosophers, playwrights, and authors are censored and almost everyone is solely focused on all the mind-numbing technology around them. In another article titled, “Study explores how Internet, technology affect young people” by Michael Abernethy, a survey explores how these machines could affect the future generations in negative way by being raised in their presence. I understand that technology is helpful and makes life a lot easier but becoming too reliant on it will weaken the ability to think freely and stopping us from seeing the real meaning in knowledge.

The end result of a mass promotional society is one in which the political process, family life, and individual development are tied together under the influence of mass media. Basic social institutions such as news and communications (i.e. television and print media), entertainment, and politics are influenced and in fact driven by the promotion of products and services. The end result of a mass promotional society is one which lacks identity because it is always searching and comparing itself to the surface images and values presented by advertisements; one which is wasteful and weak, lacking moral strength and contentment; and one which is a culture of death, not knowing itself or others and therefore being unable to participate in the shaping of the future, but merely choosing from options presented before its non-creative members.
It is no surprise that music has been used as a communication tool in advertising from as early as the radio jingles of the 1920’s. Kellaris, Cox, and Cox, 1993 perceived music to be the single most important creative ingredient in advertising. Music in advertising works alongside spoken word and often visuals to create the overall message of the advertisement. It has been discussed as to whether musical congruity enhances or devalues the desired brand message. Although a lot of studies have proven it difficult to get accurate responses in terms of musical congruity due to the subjectivity of the topic, it seems that many reports favour the use of congruent music to communicate a message in advertising. In this essay I will be discussing these views further in relation to both recent and well established theories.

In our democratic society, mass media is the driving force of public opinion. Media sources such as Internet, newspaper, news-broadcasts, etc, play significant roles in shaping a person’s understanding and perception about the events occurred in our daily lives. As long as the newspapers, internet, network television, etc, continued to be easily accessible to the public, the media will continue to have an influence in shaping its opinions. Factors such as agenda-setting, framing and priming help shape the public opinions. Agenda-setting is when the media focuses their attention on selected issues on which the public will form opinion on, whereas framing allows the media to select certain aspects about the problem and then make them appear more salient. Similarly, priming works by repeatedly exposing certain issues to public. As the issues get more exposure, the individual will be more likely to recall or retain the information in their minds. This paper will discuss these three factors played out systemically by media and how our opinions are constantly being influence and shape by them.
The mass media has played a key role in shaping people’s lives. The modern society’s use of mass media including TV, radio, newspaper, as well as print media has largely influenced people’s ideas regarding themselves and the society at large. This is evident from their behavior towards themselves and their community as well as their treatment of the environment. While some experts believe that the media is to blame for most of the negative behavioral traits among the active members of society, the majority agree that the media makes people understand and develop a positive sense of association with their society within which they live, making it easy for them to identify and get their role in it.
