Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology that was constructed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper ‘A Theory of Human Motivation.’ This theory states the needs that Maslow believed motivated humans since birth, with the lowest level of needs at the bottom and the need for self-actualization at the top. The purpose of this paper is to take Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and use it to analyze the life of a character Achilles, from the movie Troy. His hierarchy contains five different levels. The first four are the basic needs, which motivate you into action. The physiological needs, as stated by Maslow, are obvious. They are the requirements for human survival, which include breathing, food, water, sleep, homeostasis, sex, and excretion. For Achilles, meeting his physiological needs was easy. Foregoing air, homeostasis, and excretion, Achilles was provided a steady supply of food, water, and shelter as leader of the Myrmidons, an elite group of brave and skilled warriors in Greek mythology. Additionally, as leader of the Myrmidons, Achilles was often given the first choice in slaves from the ruins of defeated cities. An example of this would be prior to the Trojan War; Achilles was attempting to insure the victory in upcoming war, so he sought out the youngest of King Priam’s sons, Troilus. When Achilles found Troilus, his priorities changed when he realized how beautiful both he and his sister, Polyxena, were. More so, it identifies both the needs and their importance in our lives. Those needs are physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. This hierarchy can be used to analyze an individual’s life if living or deceased. Achilles realized and obtained all his needs, including the most elusive self-actualization. We should all be that
