Victor Frankenstein in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, started out as an intelligent young man that increasingly grew into an even more curious young man. His interest in the human body and creating life became almost became an obsession for him. He was determined to do what he needed to do in order to create the most incredible clone of a human. Victor went to great lengths to complete this occupation of his that took up nearly all of his time, including many nights of visiting the graveyards studying the human corpses. When a couple has difficulty becoming pregnant and creating another life, many will turn to this kind of procedure. Is this almost the same thing as cloning? Because the process does involve the removal and reimplantation of eggs, very similar to the process that takes place when cloning is performed. If this process is successful, which a lot of times it’s not; on many occasions multiples are created, therefore resulting in twins, triplets and sometimes even more. Is this safe? In my opinion, as long as the patients are continuously monitored by a doctor throughout their ordeal, it can be completely safe. But on the other hand, arguments have been made that when in cloning, if there is a successful clone, still many things with that clone can go wrong. Organs can grow abnormally large, that clone may not be able to reproduce, and because of the unknown effects, that clone may die at an earlier rate than that of a naturally produced human (or animal). So if the topic of cloning goes along with the interest between faith and science, is it to say that any of the scientists that are performing or attempting to perform a cloning procedure that they don’t have any faith? Today, we as a society world wide have a new issue to deal with. Science has discovered the means in which to clone animals, opening a whole new discussion. Many people are inclined to say why would science even wish to peruse this method of research. Lewis Thomas says in his essay "The Hazards of Science"
Upon first discovering how to make life, Victor is overwhelmed with excitement and pride, feeling as though he has unlocked the greatest power on earth. His imagination is “too much exalted” by this newfound ability, and thus determines there is no “animal as complex and wonderful as man” for him to attempt as his first creation (Shelley 43). Frankenstein does not contemplate how he will react to or interact with the human he gives life to, or that he has created an extremely twisted parent-child relationship by creating a human from dead bodies. His general lack of concern regarding the consequences of his remarkable yet dangerous power is the root of the rest of the conflict between him and his monster throughout the rest of the novel, and it exemplifies Shelley’s underlying theme that science should not be pushed past morally and psychologically safe boundaries.
In her novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley forewarns her audience about the consequences we face if we do not take responsibility for our actions through Victor Frankenstein’s actions. In the beginning of the novel, Victor desires fame from discovering new knowledge of the world, which leads him to create the creature whom he neglects. The neglect from its creator leads the creature to resent the Frankenstein family and ultimately murdering them. Due to his lack of responsibility as the creator of the creature, Victor is punished by having to watch his loved ones die off one by one. Reflecting on the consequences of Victor’s irresponsibility, human cloning brings concern because of the ethicality of the act.

Many people think that cloning a species is a very unideal situation. However the many benefits of cloning far outway the few disadvantages. Cloning endangered species is beneficial to saving most species around the world, in countries like the United States and China, from extinction.

Many wish to ban all cloning without even looking at the positive things that cloning will be able to provide for us in the future and with continued research. Like any new technology, people are at first afraid, but this is no excuse to abandon research that could one day save millions of people through cloned organs or give an alternative and safe means of reproduction to sterile couples. This fear has only been furthered by the media sensationalizing the advancement and tossing "Brave New World" into every headline. The uninformed also look to popular culture instead of facts to argue against cloning. Jurassic Park, Frankenstein and The Island of Doctor Moreau have shown to the majority of American the dark, evil side of cloning, which is not the aim of scientists and at present not technologically possible. It is obvious that we must act now and set guidelines, both ethical and legislative, but we should not ban cloning completely without further research.
Even though natural born animals present a higher survival rate, cloned sheep and cows show different results. Even if the cloned cows and sheep show a positive sign of survival, most of the cloned animals’ die either in the womb or after the clone exits the womb. (Anthes 63). Through this example, death dominates the choices of these cloned animals, and scientists continue the experiments for the benefits of humans. Human cloning is the process to produce a duplicate of a human being. It is the exact genetic copy and every single bit of their DNA is identical. If successful, cloning can have a lot of positive technological advancements that would help humanity. The book Frankenstein shows Victor’s god-like talent of creating life. For example, Victor’s imagination pushed him to be able to create an animal as complex as man. This is illustrated when Victor says, “But my imagination was too much exalted by my first success to permit me to doubt of my ability to give life to an animal as complex and as wonderful as man.”(32). Victor is composing an idea of how to create a being that is in the form of a human by using body parts from corpses. His recent success in college studying on how to create life leads him to believe he will be successful in creating this creature. The author added this quote to show Victor’s confidence in his intelligence and abilities. His knowledge of death can help him reverse that transition and create life. In addition, Victor demonstrated his genius mind when he created life for the first time. Victor says, “I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs” (35). Victor observes as his monster is starting to come to life.
