The civil right movement in the United States of America was organized under the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr. The main objective of the movement was to systemize a nonviolent protest to abolish racial discrimination against African-Americans because throughout history, they have encountered countless amount of traumatizing experiences in order to gain freedom, justice, and equality for all. King’s hopeful vision to end racism made a remarkable progress in the nation’s history towards Civil Rights Movement. Coates illustrated his life changing experiences and his fondness for Howard and what he called “The Mecca.” He was extremely amazed about the diversity of blackness he found there. He discovered everything he knew in multiple versions of being a black man. From highly sophisticated Nigerian to sporty looking bald-headed Q’s, preachers to clerics, born anew to hijab and long skirt and many other colors and variations of African-American. Even though he was surrounded by the amazing and beautiful people at Howard, Coates argued that racial inequality exists up to this day because he used his story to support his argument that race-related tragedy affects African American. He argued that police brutality against African-Americans was a major issue because authorities were dealing with situations with extreme and excessive force. Coates’ prime example was his college friend’s tragic and untimely death. Apparently, Prince Jones Jr., was deliberately tracked and killed by a policeman. According to Coates, the police officer that fired those 16 deadly shots to his friend got away with murder. The policeman was cleared due to insufficient evidence to justify federal charges against him. In addition, police misconduct was on the rise. He painted Paris as no other city on earth, its stunning beauty, the unique style, the culture, the breathtaking food and desserts that could be quite irresistible was absolutely one of the best experiences he ever encountered. Coates literally described Paris as a Dream City to be because he actually enjoyed the walk through beautiful sceneries of the city without being so conscious about the security of his black body. Being able to eat at a restaurant without being judged by his blackness was quiet fulfilling for him. He also expressed his most gratifying experience of being able to sip a glass of wine without having to deal with any type violence or gun pulling.
