Many years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream. A dream that has finally come true today. That black and white people will have the same rights, which they will be treated the same as one another and can live in harmony with each other. Now, I have a dream.
Women have been fighting for their rights for decades now. Some of those rights they have earned, but some they still have some fighting to do for. When people think of women in the workforce, they think of nurses, teachers, librarians, or lawyers, but not scientists or engineers. Women were not thought of as scientists because many times Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) were thought of male success areas and not female. Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered as motivation to fight for their rights and help paint the picture of what America could look like in the future. He does this by in the beginning saying that even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed African Americans are not treated as normal citizens. By saying this Martin Luther King Jr. was saying we should not just be content with being free from slavery. That now it is time to fight for our rights and to end discrimination because of the color on one’s skin.
Martin Luther King Jr’s Dream has said to have been fulfilled. However, others claim that the dream has only been taken at face value, thus, misunderstood. In John McWhorter’s article, “Black People Should Stop Expecting White America to ‘Wake Up’ to Racism,” he refers to past and recent events to establish the difference between society’s fantasy and the misinterpreted Dream of Dr. King.
People do not acknowledge the struggles that African Americans had to endure for them to be treated equally, the way a true American is supposed to be treated. One of the ways they were not treated equally was by not being able to participate in sports with whites. From the beginning of our nation, colored people were highly disrespected and treated as if they were some type of animals, which have no say in what happens to them. They were not given any opportunities and were treated harshly because their skin color was different. Whites were able to practically do anything they wanted, unlike blacks, who were racially discriminated or beaten for no apparent reason. African Americans were among the worst treated races in the US; however, this did not stop them from fighting for the rights that so many had died for. It seemed as if black people would never be treated respectfully, but just like in comic books, there is always a hero that will fight for his people. This hero soon came to the scene and he was fierce enough to change the lives of many people. Most importantly, he broke the color barrier and created a path that would allow others to follow. However, something that was inevitable was the threats and racial remarks they had to face.
The author of the “I Have A Dream” speech is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King, known for his work in Civil Rights during the 1960s. In this informative speech, Dr. King inspires individuals to have a change in both white and black citizens during the Civil RIghts era in the United States. Moreover, the premise of the speech is that both sides of the discussion must accept change in a non-violent yet effective way. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s, “I Have a Dream” speech states that Blacks were denied their equal rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (I Have a Dream). The Emancipation Proclamation, written by Abraham Lincoln, supposedly freed all slaves, but Blacks were still treated with disrespect. Blacks needed to have equal rights because they were mistreated, criticized, and they wanted their respect.
Martin Luther King Junior’s famous speech “I have a Dream” has many amazing memorable references. For example one reference is “let freedom ring” which is in the last sentence before the last paragraph of his speech. Another reference according to Standord.edu is borrowed from a speech given by a minister by the name of Archibald Carey which was a politician and family friend of Mr. Kings. That speech was delivered on 8 July 8, 1952 at the Republican National Convention. One of the best references that Mr. King mentions in his speech is from the United States Constitution itself, he said “This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” I believe King was inspired by all the men he referenced in his speech therefore he decided to honor them by using their words to prove a point to his entire beloved country and all of it’s people.

Not only did he want fair rights for African Americans, but he wanted peace and equality for all races so as a country we could all come together as one. Was Martin Luther king Jr.’s dream realized? People have many different opinions about it. I believe that his dream was realized. There are many reason s for this. Some of my main ones are as followed.
“One day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers,” stated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his famous speech. Loads of different groups of people live with each other to make a unique community. Our differences should only lift us up, not tear us apart as various people do with racial inequality. As we follow in his footsteps on the path to equality, we must remember what he did that made him that meaningful and memorable in the Civil Rights act, which has tried to stop inequality. While marching toward the Lincoln Memorial to give his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, Martin Luther King Jr. and his supporters were singing “We Shall Overcome.” The lyrics of that hymn reference a day when all men will live together in peace. Dr. King clearly stated this day had not yet come when he said, “One hundred years later, the Negro still is not free” (King Jr., 1963). A broad spectrum of injustice inspired Dr. King to speak, and after looking at the acts of racism and civil injustice prior to 1963, Dr. King was prophetic.
Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech describes the past, present, and future lives of African-Americans. Racism of African-American was a huge issue of the time, which created kairotic moment for the speech and motivated Dr. King to demonstrate the racial problems of the time. The propose of Dr. King’s speech was to inform people about racial equality and fairness by providing hope and a vision of the future. Dr. King’s speech was intended for different types of audience especially for racial supremacists and African-Americans who were discriminated against.
Women have fought for equal rights since the early 1820s and 1830s. There is a strong commitment to equality between women and men in the law. Equality among men and women has gone on for several centuries and nothing has been done about it. Providing equal rights within men and women may decrease pressure on both men and women of what their stereotypical jobs should be. If equal rights would release pressure on all humans, then why are women treated as the subdominant sex? Women should have the same rights as men and to do this it is up to the entire human race to work together to fight for equality between men and women.
“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” ” The only thing Dr. King wanted was equality, freedom, and just a sense of togetherness. Dr. King wrote the “I Have a Dream” speech and “Letter From Birmingham” to show those exact things. The “Letter From Birmingham’s” purpose was to defend the strategy of nonviolent resistance to racism. The “I Have a Dream” speech was to end racism and call for civil and economic rights.
