Throughout history martial excellence has been a key component to many nations’ overall success. For example, in the following three nations: Roman Republic, Persian Empire, and the Han Dynasty each had a certain philosophy on how their respective area would rule in regards to martial excellence. This martial philosophy enabled each area to sustain a certain way of life over several hundreds of years. Adding on, the way each area is categorized in regards to cultural frames examines their overall value or devalue of excellence in war.
During the Roman Republic, martial excellence was a key component to the everyday life in a Roman soldier’s military career. The Roman Republic can be categorized as a Hegemonic Empire as the “fear of the military force of the core keeps the provinces in line” (pg. 150) This martial excellence took place on the battlefield through their excellence in conquering the enemy. What this meant was that their martial excellence was ruled by the following, “They tended to be held together by a combination of force or its threat, administration, and created mutual interests.” (pg. 151) This meant that each citizen had the overall goal of holding true the human rights and equality set forth by the Persian Empire. With the Persian Empire being one of the first nations to rule by Federalism this meant that during times of war each nation provided their own military force. Their leader Cyrus the Great was the one who set up this idea of a Federative Empire and further showed the culture frames of excellence in war as it meant more human rights and equality for their citizens.
