One of the oldest known martial arts is kalaripayattu, its country of origin is India and was documented by a historian in the 11th or 12th century. folklore ascribes its creation to the hindu gods. It was practiced by many warrior clans of Kerala to defend the state of the king in the 11th or 12th century. Mappila Muslims adopted and practiced Kalaripayattu az their own. aint Thomas Christians also practiced Kalaripayattu and most Christian settlements had a Kalari which was usually run by a Christian Panikkar which is an officer. There was a period of decline for this martial art after the Nair warriors were defeated by by the British after the introduction of firearms and the full establishment of British colonial rule in the 19th century. The British soon banned Kalaripayattu and the Nair customs as to prevent rebellion and anti-colonial settlements. during this time many Indian martial arts were practiced in secret. The 1920s in Tellicherry saw a revival of traditional arts in south India due to a resurgence in public interest. This continued on to the 1970s with a general worldwide interest in martial arts. to further popularise the art many movies feature the art. There are many different variations and styles of Kalaripayattu but only the more practiced ones still exist while the others extinct.
