The Mars Pathfinder
Topic Sentence/Thesis Statement: The Mars Pathfinder was created to conduct specific experiments on Mars, but to also test a new atmospheric entrance method. It sent back more than 2.3 billion bits of data, which have shaped our understanding of Mars and its history.

The Mars Pathfinder consisted of a lander and a lightweight robotic rover named Sojourner, in honor of Sojourner Truth, an African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist.
It pioneered the Space age as the first mobile robot ever sent to another planetary body.
The Mars Pathfinder was developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA, which is an independent agency of the US Government.

A warm and wet Mars could have sustained water. In current conditions, liquid water would either freeze or evaporate almost immediately due to the temperature and pressure on Mars.

The Mars Pathfinder tested a new atmospheric entry technique.
The spacecraft shed the heat shield during entry of Mars atmosphere, and then dropped, deploying a parachute. Air bags deployed 8 seconds before “landing”, and moments before landing rocket engines fired in an attempt to smooth the landing jolt.
The Pathfinder bounced at least 16 times before coming to a complete stop.
Miraculously, the spacecraft landed right side up, and fully functional.
