“The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin is closely related to the story “Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck. These stories relate with accordance in their thought of marriage to be an oppressive institution. Both stories show women who feel as though they are trapped, and feel unloved in their marriage. Mrs. Mallard felt as though she was trapped in her marriage, and she lost herself. With the same feelings, Elisa Allen also felt trapped and rather unloved from her husband. Kate Chopin and John Steinbeck express the same views on marriage in their short stories. In the short story “Chrysanthemums,” Elisa Allen is a woman who is unhappy and lonely in her marriage. Her husband is regularly attending to the cattle and the farm, Elisa is left alone with her chrysanthemums. Elisa is described as not caring too much about her appearance because she feels no one will pay attention anyway. , “Her face lean and strong…Her figure looked blocked and heavy in her gardening costume, a man’s black hat pulled low” is an example of Elisa’s appearance and how it seems to be rugged for a woman...

The narrator is confined to a room with strange wall-paper. This odd wall-paper seems to symbolize the complexity and confusion in her life. In “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, the protagonist, Mrs. Mallard must also deal with conflict as she must deal with the death of her spouse. At first there is grief, but then there is the recognition that she will be free. The institute of marriage ties the two women of these two short stories together. Like typical young women of the late 19th century, they were married, and during the course of their lives, they were expected to stay married. Unlike today where divorce is commonplace, marriage was a very holy bond and divorce was taboo. This tight bond of marriage caused tension in these two characters. Their personal freedom was severely restricted. For Mrs. Mallard, marriage was a curse to be reckoned with. She knew inside that her marriage was wrong, but she could not express her feelings openly. In conclusion, “The story of an hour” is a clear depiction that women status in the society determines the choices they make about their lives. In this work, Chopin depicts a woman as a lesser being without identity or voices of their own. They are expected to remain in oppressive marriages and submit to their husbands without question.
It is easily inferred that the narrator sees her mother as extremely beautiful. She even sits and thinks about it in class. She describes her mother s head as if it should be on a sixpence, (Kincaid 807). She stares at her mother s long neck and hair and glorifies virtually every feature. The narrator even makes reference to the fact that many women had loved her father, but he chose her regal mother. This heightens her mother s stature in the narrator s eyes. Through her thorough description of her mother s beauty, the narrator conveys her obsession with every detail of her mother. Although the narrator s adoration for her mother s physical appearance is vast, the longing to be like her and be with her is even greater.

The trials of the protagonists in both narratives are distinctive in many ways, only similar when it totals the macho goaded culture of that time. In both stories women are bamboozled by men, they become misguided and gain a desire. Aiming to achieve the desire causes them to see a false reality and in ruination.

In the short story, “The Story of an Hour,” author Kate Chopin presents the character of Mrs. Louis Mallard. She is an unhappy woman trapped in her discontented marriage. Unable to assert herself or extricate herself from the relationship, she endures it. The news of the presumed death of her husband comes as a great relief to her, and for a brief moment she experiences the joys of a liberated life from the repressed relationship with her husband. The relief, however, is short lived. The shock of seeing him alive is too much for her bear and she dies.
