Marriage and divorce have changed a lot over the years for many reasons. Education, financial security, child marriage, arranged vs. love marriage, are all things that have affected marriage. Marriage rates have decreased over the years around the world due to these different factors. For many people education is highly valued and they have concerns that starting a family will get in the way of it. People also feel the need to be financially secure before started their own family. They want to be sure that they can support themselves before bringing someone else into their life to care for. Child marriage has been a problem around the world for a long time. Some people prefer love over-arranged and suggest that it is more successful than arranged marriages. Studies have shown that men and women in both types of marriage reported high levels of satisfaction, commitment, and passionate and companionate love. South and East Asia, the Middle East, and South America who were all once very strict on arranged marriage seem to be backing out of it (“To Love or to Arrange?”). Studies showed that the men have higher levels of passionate and companionate love for their spouses and commitment to their marriages than did the women in arranged marriages. A recent study examining Indian couples in arranged marriages, and U.S. couples of love marriages revealed that in terms of marital satisfaction, the two groups are very similar (“To Love or to Arrange?”). According to Dr. William Cornell, a Marriage and Counselor professor at the University of Florida, “Culture plays a large role in deciding whether a love marriage is better than an arranged marriage- it is all a matter of perspective” (“To Love or to Arrange?”). Due to cultural differences, it is difficult to say which form of marriage is the best. However, love and arranged marriage, both have benefits to them. The article “To Love or to Arrange?” states, “In arranged marriages there are fewer incompatibilities such as same religion, caste, dietary preference, linguistic group, socioeconomic background, etc. In a love marriage, there is individual autonomy, meaning that it 's your life, so you choose who you want to spend it with.” The two individuals also know one another well. At the end, it all depends on what background the person comes from. There really isn’t one that is better than the other. It all depends on the two individuals ability to adjust and understand one
