Unit 5
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Learning Objectives
Unit 5 is divided into two lessons:
Lesson 5A: Personal and Online Selling
Lesson 5B: The Marketing Plan
Unit 5 wraps up the promotional techniques with personal and online selling, then calls on you to pull it all together for your project with a final Marketing Plan in place of a final exam. This will complete the “learning by doing” part of the course and give you a taste of what marketers do that affects our lives.
Overview of Written Assignment
Lesson 5A is really a carryover of two more promotional elements from Lesson 4B: personal selling and online selling, which could be considered as part of direct marketing, but which gets its own consideration in Chapter 21 of the text. Personal selling and sales management could be a course of their own, and we will keep that brief without a written assignment. Online selling, however, is a hot topic, even after the burst of the Internet stock bubble, with much written about it. We will try to summarize strategic choices and good practices for you, and we will give you a chance to design a Website for your product, service, or organization (on paper – you will not have to learn computer programming here). If your organization already has a Website, we will ask you to critique it using the guidelines we give you for a good design.
Lesson 5B wraps it all up and asks you to pull together the components of the Marketing
Plan you have been building, lesson by lesson, and send it in. That will be, in effect, your final exam, and hopefully something you can use in the future.

The Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell is a book that will alter the way we compered success and hard work. Outliers is a book that significances to explain why some people succeed far more than others. Gladwell suggests that a success like Bill Gates a multi billionaire software engineer is more attributable to external factors than anything within the man. Gates was a lucky and genius man even his birth date turns out to play a profound importance in his success. Gladwell claims it takes time and hard work to become better and well-off, however those who have succeeds are looked upon role models, but those have failed we are too contemptuous about
Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” was published in 1969 at a time when autobiographies of women, especially black women, were a way of proclaiming the significance of women’s lives, and examining issues of certain impact to women. It is the resilient and harrowing coming-of-age story of Maya Angelou, born Marguerite Ann Johnson, set in Stamps (Arkansas), St. Louis and San Francisco. It reveals the difficulties associated with the mixture of racial and gender discrimination experienced by a southern black girl. At the same time, she declares many issues, such as the relationship between parents and children, child abuse, and the search for one’s own path in life. Three of the influential women in Maya's life notably influence self-growth, strength of character and love of literature.
In his book Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcom Gladwell presents to readers how all his research can all become one inside a paradigm. The definition of paradigm is a new way of think or looking at something. Paradigm is also an example, pattern and or archetype. Gladwell divides his book into two parts, opportunity and legacy. In part one, Gladwell incorporates different stories and ideas consisting of opportunity, 10,000 hours, timing, intelligence, and types of work over generations. In part two, Gladwell explains culture, culture impacts decisions, Chinese vs math, and kids working harder. All these stories that Gladwell incorporated in to his book explains how each of these stories are a key to success.
Another aspect of Gladwell’s article that I found interesting was his in-depth investigation of the specific cases of racism. With each example, Gladwell uses his criteria to break down the situation and determine the degree of racism that was conveyed by Michael Richards, Mel Gibson, and Michael Irvin.
A poor, black man from the banlieue of France enters the world of a wealthy, white Parisian businessman – their lives represent opposite ends of the spectrum, and yet by a twist of fate, they form an inspiring relationship. The Intouchables is a story that follows Driss, the poor Senegalese immigrant, who by an unlikely chance came to be the caregiver of Philippe, the extremely rich aristocrat in which a paragliding accident left him quadriplegic. These two men are both pariahs of society: one via paralysis, trapped in the prison that is his body, and the other through classism and the lack of support that left him isolated on the fringes of Parisian suburbs. Despite this similarity, they nonetheless possess stark contrasts phenotypically and
First, Gladwell’s claims are impressively effective as a direct result of his use of professional expertise. Perhaps one of the most important aspects in chapter two, entitled The 10,000-Hour Rule, is the inclusion of professional neurologist, Daniel Levitin, who absolutely supports Gladwell’s main argument. “Ten thousand hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class expert – in anything,” writes Levitin (40). Equally important to the arguments made in chapter two, psychologist K. Anders Ericsson provides professional insight into the world of the “gifted.” In addition, Gladwell makes use of the findings of professional psychologist, Michael Howe, and renowned music critic, Harold Schonberg, regarding the length of time it took Mozart to produce “his greatest works” (41). By including these experts, Levitin and Howe, within his argument, Gladwell strengthens his claim that success frequently depends on how...

Moreover, Angelou’s profound understanding of the topic of the African-American woman’s struggle manifests itself throughout the novel, for she can severely critique the racism and sexism surrounding people of her race and gender, yet still learn to harbor a great love for all people. She understands that “growing up is painful for the Southern Black girl,” but that “being aware of her displacement is the rust on the razor that threatens the throat”
Insights into family resilience allowed me to understand that if my family was not resilient and could not adapt to the situation, members of the family could be considered neglected. Luckily this was not true, each member still had their individual and familial needs
The most important thing in life is relationships with other people. Every relationship has the power to shape lives, whether it is in a good or bad way. In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, the main character, Maya, forms a relationship the influences the rest of her life. Maya’s relationship with Mr. Freeman causes desensitizes her and causes pain and confusion.
I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such moving wonder, such a luminous dignity. I have no words for this achievement, but I know that not since the days of my childhood, when the people in books were more real than the people one saw every day, have I found myself so moved. Her portrait is a Biblical study of life in the midst of death. James Baldwin
Market opportunities for breakfast cereals is vast, some segments of the market have been neglected, most notably that of the over-50’s. Insightful presentations were given at the “Older, Richer, Wiser” Conference that would suggest the over 50’s market segment is targetable.
