Dysfunction Fifteen year old Christopher of Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is believed to struggle with autism. It changes his overall outlook on life and limits what he can do, so most people would feel sympathy for a child struggling with a disability. Ironically, when Christopher’s home life takes a turn for the worst, this “disability” turns out to be a blessing for him. Because of his inability to fully process his emotions, his condition is an advantage for him, protecting him from the emotional and traumatizing aspects of this world. This unique character Christopher was thought up by talented writer Mark Haddon, who wanted to give his writers a taste of what it is like the experience the world a little differently than most. Prior to this novel, Haddon was traditionally thought of as a children 's author, and writing this novel directed toward an adult audience was freeing to him ("Mark Haddon"). He didn 't have to alter what he said to appeal to a young audience and felt he could write this novel for himself instead of for the kids ("Haddon"). Haddon wrote this novel from the perspective of a fifteen year old boy with autism, or some disorder that gives him irrational fears of the world and limits his social functions. Haddon did very little formal research about autism, but he worked with autistic people earlier in his life which gave him insight as to how to make Christopher, the main character, behave ("Mark Haddon"). Some people found Haddon 's portrayal of Christopher to be very offensive, stereotypical, and over exaggerated as a person with autism ("Mark Haddon").
