In 1922, women from Calvary Episcopal Church and St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral established the Church Mission of Help, based on an outreach mission program at Trinity Episcopal Church in New York City. The program focused delinquent women and girls over sixteen who found themselves in difficult situations. The program was run by volunteers until 1924 when the first staff person was hired, Miss Theresa de Birmingham, as Executive Secretary. In 1925, Miss Agnes Grabau became Executive Secretary and served in that capacity until 1960. During her tenure, many changes occurred. The agency's name was changed to Youth Service on May 21, 1947, and the mission was expanded to include boys and to provide vocational counseling in 1948.
In 1962, the agency was incorporated as an independent non-profit organization known as Youth Service in Memphis. The Rev. Donald E. Mowery was hired as Executive Director in 1963 and served until 1994 when he retired. In the past, the agency had provided services to young people in its office. Father Don took his work to the streets. The agency became one of the first in Memphis to integrate its programs. During the civil unrest that followed the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it became increasingly difficult to find outdoor spaces to hold integrated activities. This prompted a partnership with the Naval Air Station in Millington. In 1988, a community volunteer, Rebecca Webb Wilson, brought a program called Bridge Builders to Youth Service. Her idea was to bring together high school students from diverse backgrounds for summer conferences and year-long activities that would build leadership skills while simultaneously forging ties between future leaders of the community. The program b...

Being a participant in the program, manager’s training, college degrees, and youth training conferences have all prepared Mario to perform his job to the best of his abilities. Mario is very passionate about his profession and truly believes that youth can make a difference. Having experienced the program first-hand as a child, Mario is aware of the thoughts and feelings students may experience. Mario uses this information to modify the program to be able to touch as many students as possible. As Mario stands at the graduation from the program each year, he looks out at the many faces about to embark on a new adventure into the real world. His only hope is that the teachings they acquired will be put into action to create a better tomorrow for themselves and the community.
Throughout the years of being a student at Council Rock, I have come to the realization of what a true leader is. A leader is not someone that just plans events, collects money, or shows up to meetings. Rather, this is someone that has a true connection with their peers, and has unmatched passion for what they do. With this, I can confidently say that since seventh grade, as a young adult, I have been shaped into an individual that fits these traits. Since that time, I have been involved in student government,
During this past summer I had the opportunity to travel to the Washington Leadership Conference (WLC), where I learned about leadership, citizenship, and service. During the conference we met in what was called large groups and community groups. Each community group had their own unique name, with some being called “revolutionaries” or the “legacies”, but the name of my group was the “Rough Riders”. At the time I really did not know much about the history of the Rough Riders or their impact in history, but after some research and watching a movie based on this story I was able to see a real life example of what lea...
At the end of my junior year of high school I was told that I was chosen, along with one other junior boy, to be a primary delegate to attend Badger Boys State, a week long youth program at Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin that brings more than eight hundred and fifty boys together to learn about leadership and the United States Government. Although only one week of my life, I can confidently say that Badger Boys State is one of the best and most significant experiences I have ever had.
“Leadership is a relationship between those who aspire to lead and those who choose to follow” (Kouzes and Posner, p. 30). Over the past two years, Sunshine Elementary School has experienced an extremely high turnover rate. To reduce and improve past destruction, staff will learn to model the way by demonstrating the values set forth by myself. The values are the standard that will assist in the development of an organization filled with a variety of leadership that will create an atmosphere of a superb leadership growth school wide. Sunshine Elementary School (SES) is the pilot for this leadership development blueprint for Pflugerville Independent
He died 26 years ago this week in a London hotel room, with a girlfriend who couldn't make up her mind to call an ambulance. James Marshall Hendrix had ingested nine German sleeping pills, some wine, and a meal of brown rice. He was 27 years old.
The JP Morgan Chase Summer Institutes are a series of two week long programs that focus on college readiness, technical and academic careers. Throughout the summer, they have multiple institutes that take place in our local community colleges. This past summer, I was fortunate enough to be able to attend one of their institutes. Although, no one was officially assigned a leadership role, I took the initiative during many activities to become the leader of my group. These groups ranged from small to large groups. The small groups consisted of five to ten students while the large group consisted of all of the students enrolled in the program which was over fifty. My role consisted of being the leader during many problem solving activities. Also, when it came time to volunteer for certain activities, I would always be the first one to set the example and others would follow.

that helps underserved and at-risk youth to reach their full potential through outdoor leadership and mentoring programs. Thus far,
Volunteerism has always been the most important element of my overall involvement; my first, long-term goal reflects this. Since I entered high school, I have pursued many opportunities that exploit my desire to volunteer. I thoroughly enjoy giving my time and talents to those in need as well as the character and communication skill development with which volunteerism provides me. The skills that I have earned through my work with and for others relate directly to those required to be a successful leader. Like volunteerism, leadership, the subject of my second goal, is also something I hold close to my heart. I am fond of leadership because of my experience with the empowering feeling that being a leader provides. Such opportunities to lead have pushed me to become a proponent of the development of leadership skills among youth through additional volunteerism with...
As an active leader in several organizations, I have had the opportunity to reach out to several different groups of youth throughout my years. The utmost prestigious role I have gained is my Area IX Office in the Texas FFA Association. Being an area IX officer had been my goal since freshman year, and I finally accomplished it this past May. Over the course of the past few months, we have held several leadership camps, but I feel our highest success has been the Area IX FFA Leadership Camp held in June.

As a native of Lancaster, I feel an obligation to act and do something that will benefit my community. I am well aware of the many perils that youth face, and these obstacles can be extremely difficult to overcome without positive figures to aid and provide guidance. There is a great need for an intensive mentoring program within the community to positively influence the lives of youth. For The Land of Dreams, I have proposed to host a community basketball tournament to raise funds to implement a mentoring program to assist in the personal growth and career development of youth in Lancaster County and surrounding areas. The program will form partnerships with local school districts and the juvenile court system. This event will aid Lancaster County by providing additional discretionary resources that will be used to fund such activities as tutoring programs, leadership courses, and college tours.
In building leadership capacity it is important to ensure that there is broad-based skillful participation. We want the students, parents, community, and staff to be participants. This is important because it allows for staff to take responsibility for the growth and development for not only themselves but for their peers in doing the work of leadership. It is helpful to have the community working together towards the common goal as opposed to ...
Currently in Canada, about 42000 youths have mentors through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and there are still thousands of youth on their waiting list. After learning about how many kids were not able to get mentors, I decided to volunteer with Big Brothers Big sisters as a teen mentor for elementary kids during my last year of highschool. Peer mentoring is not the usual kind of mentoring that people think of. In the conventional type of mentoring, there usually an older individual, one who’s had professional experiences in a certain mentoring field, and an individual seeking these specific services. Peer mentoring is different because the title of the mentor and and the mentee is equal (Holbeche,1996, p.24). The members involved in peer mentoring develope a relationship with one another after either occasional or regular meetings (Holbeche, 1996, p.25). The objective of the relationship is to allow the members to coach each other, help solve problems going on in their lives, and build personal skills. (Holbeche, 1996, p.26). Going into
