On March 25, 2015, speaking at the European Parliament, French euro deputy Dominique Martin, from the Front National (FN), advocated for the “liberty of women not to work” as it would “improve the education of children while releasing jobs.” In sum, sending women back home in order to fight unemployment. Shocked by this statement, I looked up his profile on the Front National’s website and realized that M. Martin studied as the Saint-Cyr, one of the top-universities in France. I did the same for my primary independent variable “edu_group” which also had some missing values, as well as for “age”, which is one of my other independent variable. For marital status, I also took out the missing values but I also referred to create a new ordinal variable, which I named dummy_marriage, indicating only if the person was never married (0) or is married (1).

The expectations held by a society define the roles of its members. While many factors influence the parts individuals play in their cultures and communities, education has always been the crucial element in the establishment of social roles. Education was the catalyst which changed women's roles in society from what they were in the late 1800s to what they are now.
All occupations in the workforce are categorized as jobs for women or jobs for men, but women have another option of not going into the workforce and being a stay at home parent since being a stay at home parent is not considered a job. Women are pushed towards staying home, having children and consequently taking care of those children, while men are expected to be the breadwinners even though "fewer than one in five married families with children fit the stereotype of Dad as breadwinner, Mom full-time at home" (Bravo, Santa Anna, Meric 179). There is a hierarchy related to the different fields of work and fields of work that are dominated by men are thought highly of. In the book Difference Matters, Brenda J Allen, begins writing about how gender matters in society. Gender roles are now beginning to change at home and work. In a study released, by the Pew Research Center, “40% of all households with children under the age of 18 include mothers who are either the sole or primary source of income for the family” (Wang). Married women are now becoming the “breadwinner” of the family. Although gender roles are beginning to shift, society still has not grown out of its gender stereotypes and double standards are more evident in mainstream media.
In conclusion, although the roles of men and women have radically changed over the turn of the century, it is still inevitable to have various gender related occupational differences because the social and biological roles of women and men do not really change. The society still perceives women as the home makers and men as the earners, and this perception alone defines the differing roles of men and women in the labor market.
The roles women typically play in the family may not always be consistent with success in the occupational arena. Staying home to care for a sick child may conflict with an important meeting (Broman 1991:511). Sometimes there has to be a change of plans when it comes to the family. Most people believe that family comes first no matter what.
