Recommended: What are the negative impacts of the legalization of marijuana on the economy

What is hemp? People often say and hear this word, but chances are they might not even know the true meaning of it. Hemp is a plant that produces cannabis and happens to be the most durable natural soft fiber on the face of the planet (The Union). Now, you might ask yourself how, such a useful plant can be illegal. My answer to you is marijuana. Marijuana or cannabis is produced from the hemp plants, and contains a chemical known as THC. This chemical plant gets you “high” when you smoke or ingest it properly, but there is so much more to marijuana than what meets the eye. Marijuana has been used for thousands of years and people just do not even realize it. A good majority of people in today’s society think marijuana is a terrible drug that can kill people and ruin their lives and believe the lies that make this drug illegal. I believe that marijuana should be legalized in America because it opens up countless number of job opportunities, has been proven to be beneficial for medicinal uses, and is not harmful to use, but we will come back to that.

What many people do not know is that before anti-marijuana laws, marijuana was used all the time. Hemp was used to make clothes and rope and other things. Hemp started in China and worked its way through India before reaching Europe. America was introduced to hemp by Christopher Columbus, and it soon became a cash crop. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp, Henry Ford used a hemp plastic to help make the Model T and used oil made from hemp to make it run. Even the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp. (The History of Marijuana). ...e fact that such a useful plant is illegal and could literally be America’s savior from debt is immensely ignorant. I like to believe that in my generation I will see marijuana become legalized in all aspects, but will the billion dollar plant ever become legalized? Only time will tell.

A study carried out in California clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of marijuana as a treatment for cancer: “Over 74 percent of the cancer patients treated in the program have reported that marijuana is more effective in relieving their nausea and vomiting than any other drug they have tried.”(Zeese 1990). Chemotherapy for cancer patients often produces nausea and vomiting. Marijuana has been proven to relieve these symptoms and there have been no known side effects recorded (Ad Hoc Group of Experts part 4).
