Growing up, everyone is told that, “Drugs are bad for you,” time and time again. As a kid you don’t really understand the way of thinking in the wake of it, but you listen to your influence figure regardless. I remember being told this my entire life and even to this very day. Growing older, we realize that people would still use drugs even though it’s illegal. Why would someone go against the law and jeopardize their life just to use drugs? The drug being talked about is marijuana, and surprisingly it is all around us. Marijuana is even referred to in today’s media sources that people enjoy, like music, movies, and TV shows, do not even bother to leave the drug out of their system. Why is it that this drug has become illegal all over the world? The debate to legalize marijuana in the United States of America and other countries as well has been fought over nonstop since the existence of the drug and its effects. Marijuana has been tested and proven to provide a very positive impact on the American society for many reasons. Some of these reasons are for America’s economy, health and even crime. These reasons could very well help America thrive in the future and that’s why countries all over the world even Kenya should consider legalizing it.

Marijuana is a public name for an illegal substance (drug) produced from the Cannabis (Cannabis sativa) plant. It is also called weed, ganja, grass, kaya and pot. The drug has many chemical compounds and in particular, it has THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) which is responsible for changing mind functions leading to alternations of cognition, mood, behavior, perception and consciousness. “It is the most widely used illicit substance in the world” (World, 2010, p. 198). Its usage includes religious, medicinal, recreational and spiritual purposes. In the beginning of the 20th century, in most countries marijuana was illegalized.

Willie Nelson once said, “I think people need to be educated to the fact that marijuana is not a drug. Marijuana is an herb and a flower. God put it here. If He put it here and He wants it to grow, what gives the government the right to say that God is wrong?”
Cannabis, more commonly known as marijuana, is a plant that people have been using recreationally for years. In fact, people have consumed marijuana since ancient times. Until 1906, the year the United States Congress passed the Pure Food and Drug Act. The debate on whether or not marijuana should be legalized in the United States has really blown up within the last decade. And finally, in 2012, Colorado became the first state to officially legalize marijuana for medicinal and recreational uses. The prohibition of marijuana has gone on for far too long, and it is time for America to change its views.
Is marijuana really that bad? Since the 1930's marijuana has been illegal in the United States because it went along with the alcohol prohibition. Somehow, Americans make tons of money off of it each year. People whole smoke marijuana favor legalization, as well as those who do not smoke but want to help the economy out. Many of us who do not smoke want to legalize it because we see that if it is illegal, it does not support what marijuana can do for the economy and for medical reasons. Marijuana should be legal because it would have a much more positive affect on society, rather than keeping it illegal.

Marijuana is a cannabis drug that may be used for medical purposes. It was used to soothe malaria and constipation in many Asian countries including India and China (Ashton). It has the capability to relieve the pain of a serious sickness like malaria as well as a common every day stomach sickness like constipation. Marijuana has also been used therapeutically for the common disease asthma (Ashton). It “exert[s] a bronchodilator action on the small airways” therefore allowing a person to breathe better (Ashton). Marijuana has not only been used for amusement but it has been a treatment for many illnesses therefore; we need to consider all the characteristics of marijuana before making a decision to legalize it for medical purposes.
