Modernism Modernism gained form circa 1850, it proposed “new forms of art on the grounds that these were more appropriate to the (present) time. It is therefore characterised by constant innovation and a rejection of conservative values such as the realistic depiction of the world. This has led to experiments with form and to an emphasis on processes and materials. (TATE.org.uk, assessed 27 Oct 2014)

Other painters such as Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch, along with Paul Gaugin, were the pioneers of the Expressionist movement.
