In Albert Jonsen’s (1998) estimation, bioethics historian Hans Jonas was “the first philosopher of eminence to arrive on the medical ethics scene” (p. 241). Jonas (2000) characterized his own philosophy as an “existential interpretation of biological facts” (p. xxiii). According to Jonsen, Jonas “provided all nascent bioethicists an exemplar of serious, disciplined, and deep philosophical reflection” (p. 241). One of Jonas’s early papers is particularly worthy of singling out for my current purposes. His “Technology and Responsibility: Reflections on the New Tasks of Ethics” (1973) makes a case for responsible restraint in the use of technological power to counter a drift toward “automatic utopianism.” Between a stint as managing editor of Commonweal, a lay Catholic review of religion, politics, and culture, and his founding (with Willard Gaylin) of the Hastings Center in 1969, Daniel Callahan published an important early article on “The Sanctity of Life,” in which he explored “the rapid expansion of the range of human alternatives” in dealing with the issue of “human co...

Cases have been widely used in medical ethics and law. In both fields, numerous books and articles about cases have appeared, including book-length catalogs of cases. I argue that pluralistic casuistry provides an adequate approach to environmental ethics. It retains the strengths while avoiding the weaknesses of the other approaches. Importantly, it resolves some broader theoretical issues and provides a clear, explicit methodology for education and praxis.
Christian Church's Influence on the Medical Progress The Christian Church was very powerful and had influence on many things which you wouldn't imagine they would have, one being medicine. The Church mainly hindered medical progress but we will see how it did and see if it helped medicine in any ways. When it came to developing new medical ideas the Church hindered its progression. An example of this is when Roger Bacon, a 13th century priest, was imprisoned for heresy after he suggested that there should be a new approach to medicine and original research should be thought of instead of using old ideas such as Galen's.

...their current circumstances to provide efficacious care. While there is widespread agreement for policies like banning smoking in all public places, there is clearly a push against programs such as clean needle exchanges, free medical check-ups for those involved in prostitution, and monitored injection clinics. Division within a side only serves to delegitimize the side’s beliefs, and more needs to be done to unify the individuals in support of harm reduction. One way to further legitimize harm reduction would be to create a harm reduction code of ethics. I imagine this would be a hard fought document, but it would be a proactive step in resolving these disputes. Nevertheless, I am glad to see the discussion of ethics and harm reduction is occurring, and I hope that as it endures, it will help implement sound and fair harm reduction policies throughout the world.
