In my hometown, people don’t have a lot of extra money to spend. Most children have the bare minimum of what they need. A large majority of my community is Hispanic and soccer is a very big deal at the high school level. Every little boy grows up wanting to play for the high school team. I was home visiting some friends, when we decided to go to the soccer field. We were shooting around for about half an hour when some younger boys showed up. I didn’t know them but my friends did. We shot around with them and played a few games of world cup. That’s when I noticed one of the boys had cleats with holes in them. It was starting to get dark and the boys said they had to go home. After, they left I asked my friends about the boy with holes in his cleats. They said his family was new to the area and didn’t have a lot of money. I learned the boy’s name was Guillermo. I was amazed about how good the Guillermo was at soccer without playing for a club team. Most people don’t know that soccer is an expensive sport. I called up my friends and told them what I wanted to do, they thought it was a good idea and wanted to help. One of my friends knew the family and asked if Guillermo wanted to come with us to Salem. We brought her little brother with us so it wouldn’t be weird. We took the Guillermo to Dicks Sporting goods store. He tried on at less five pairs of cle... ... middle of paper ... ...orry makes all the difference to me. I like to think my friends and I also taught Guillermo about the kindness of strangers. Our community is very close and I would like to think we made Guillermo feel more at home. This experience of learning about the Popcorn Theory has made a major impact how I view helping people. I can do simple things to help people and you never know how much impact you may have on someone else. In the future I plan on helping as many people as possible. I especially plan on continuing to help Guillermo. I believe Guillermo as a very bright future and I want to help him realize that there is more to life than just our town. That there’s more than finishing high school and going to work for the canning company or lumber yard. He has so many possibilities through playing soccer. He could make a better life for himself and his family.
