A. What is global warming and what kind of effects it could have?
1. It is an overall temperature that changes dramatically over small amount of time.
2. Temperature during the summer can increase at a phenomenal rate.
3. Winters may become warmer.
4. Make the arctic ice melt which will increase sea level.
B. What causes it?
1. A lot of carbon dioxide which produce unstable greenhouse effect. Greenhouse effect works as sort of blanket against infrared rays.
2. Most of the carbon dioxide comes from plants that burn fossil fuels. It also can come from burning trees.
C. What can be done to overcome it?
1. By using less electricity can reduce the gases.
2. Drive your car less and ride a bike more.
3. Burning fewer things that have carbon dioxide.
4. Plant a tree, because trees absorb carbon dioxide and give clean oxygen.
II. Acid Rain
A. What is acid rain and what causes it.
1. Acid rain is an acid droplet which contains mix of different gases such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.
2. Power plants release the majority of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides by burning fossil fuels such as coal, to produce energy.
3. Acid rain can also be referred to acid deposition, which comes in two forms.
a. A wet deposition usually happens when participation removes acid from the atmosphere and deposits it on the earth’s surface.
Rain is naturally acidic, due to the CO2 dissolved in it, however when sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen react with the rain water they form sulphuric, and nitric acids which make the rain strongly acidic. SO2 + ½O2 + H2O → H2SO4 It may also take the form of snow or fog. The sulphur dioxides and oxides of nitrogen come mainly from industry. Acid rain is currently a subject of great controversy because of widespread environmental damage for which it has been blamed, including eroding structures, injuring crops and forests, and threatening or depleting life in freshwater lakes.
Acid rain has been proven to have damage forests, fresh waters and soils, killing insect and aquatic life-forms. It also causes damage to buildings and impacts on human health. Many people do not know what acid rain actually is. Acid rain is any form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, low pH levels, higher than normal amounts of sulfuric and nitric acid, occurs naturally and from man made sources. Forms when gases react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals (what is acid rain?). The only water that will not have some amount of acidity is pure water. Pure water has a pH of 7 which is neutral; regular, unpolluted rain water has a pH of around 5.6. The acidity in rain water comes from the presence of Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen Oxide, and Sulfur Dioxide. CO2 reacts with water to form carbonic acid. Nitrogen and water react during lightning storms, forming Nitric Oxide. NO is then oxidized to form N02. The NO2 reacts with water to form nitric acid. Due to this, the pH is lowered to be slightly acidic (Acid Rain). Acid rain can occur naturally in the environment, but the problem occurs when human interaction is the cause of the acidic levels.
The emission of carbon dioxide has contributed to 80% to the heating of the earth atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is produced due the burning of fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal and oil. The burning of fossil fuel is very important in our society today, because it is used for cooking, used to produce electricity, for heating, for cooling and also for transportation. The industrialization has led to the use of fossil fuel for running machines and driving cars. The building of fossil fuel contributes towards 80-90% of the carbon dioxide we find in our atmosphere today. The other 25% is induced by the destruction of the world's forests. The reason for this is that there are less trees and plants to take in the CO2 but there is just as many, if not more, humans and animals to breathe it out.
