The Federal Transit Association (FTA) defines BRT as a rapid mode of transportation that can combine the quality of rail transit and the flexibility of buses according to Thomas (2001). A more detail definition of BRT is a flexible, services, vehicles, running way, rubber tired rapid transit mode that combines stations and ITS elements into an integrated system with a strong positive image and identity. BRT system is designed to be appropriate to the market they serve and their physical surroundings and can be incrementally implemented in a variety of environments. In brief, BRT is an integrated system of facilities, amenities, and services that collectively improve the reliability, speed, and identity of bus transit. First is runningways, it is referring to significantly impact travel reliability, speeds and identity. Options range from general traffic lanes to fully grade-separated BRT transit ways. Meaning that BRT has their own runways same as light rail transport (LRT).
Second is stations, it refer as the entry point to the BRT system, are the single most important customer interface, affecting reliability, security, safety, comfort, and accessibility, as well as dwell times, and system image. BRT station options vary from simple stops with basic shelters to complex stations and intermodal terminals with many amenities that integrate more than one mode of transport such as road and rail.
Third is a vehicle, BRT systems can utilize a wide range of vehicles, from regular buses to specialized vehicles. Options vary in terms of design, internal configuration, size, propulsion system, and horizontal/longitudinal control, all of which impact service quality, capacity and system performance.
