Paul is well known and respected throughout the Hutu community, a hardworking, very family oriented and compassionate individual. Constantly places others safety and wellbeing before his own. In the film Paul goes from a man who believes as long as his family is fine no one else’s safety matters, to an individual who put his life on the line to save those who he at one point could care less for. Soon after the story of the film develops, Paul and his family watch as their neighbor a member of the Tutsi tribe, gets taken in front of the entire neighborhood. Paul does not want to react he even states “he is not family, family is all that matters.” This showed just how selfish Paul was towards anyone who did not share the same blood as him,
