In the reading, “Education for Macro Intervention a Survey of Problems and Prospects,” the author Jack Rothman discusses challenges facing Macro Practice in Schools of Social Work. Rothman’s concern is the lack of interest or lack of academic support for the community or administration macro practice in social work education. According to Rothman, this issue is not recent or unrecognized in the profession and among social work’s professionals. After reviewing the responses of his claim, Rothman suggests that students lack interest in macro practice due to short supply of scholarships and most school curriculums are primarily clinical, which neglects or marginalized macro courses. These careers fall into the category of “Micro” social work and they involve face-to-face contact with clients experiencing socio-emotional difficulties. However, that is not all you can do with a degree in social work, which many students are not aware of. I agree with Rothman that the landscape of social work is changing. With the economic roller coaster, micro social workers need to advocate for themselves and their jobs on a community level. They may see emerging trends with their clients or barriers to services that need to be resolved by the state or local government. Macro social workers need to understand how social work practice influences the issues they are championing as lobbyists and government agents. At the end of the day, social workers serve people and all of its levels of practice are important. To recalibrate the imbalance between micro and macro social work, I believe that macro policies and standards should be strengthened; macro faculty and the field instructors should teach more and share their experiences with students, more promotion and public support of macro leaders and practitioners and develop a unifying curriculum for both micro and macro …show more content…

Yes, my future position job may be “social worker” at a middle school serving children who are considered “at-risk,” but during the course of that work, I may discover that several of my students live in an apartment complex that is being torn down by the city and all of those families are being evicted. I might be able to help the families connect with a church or other community agency that can assist them in finding housing and cover expenses of an unexpected move. I could find myself advocating that kids who experience homelessness for the benefit of a city road expansion are less likely to be engaged in learning and are more likely to engage in high risk behaviors than their more comfortably housed peers. The family’s unexpected move, allowed me the social worker to work in macro and micro levels practice, which is the type of position I hope to achieve. Our code of ethics encourages us to do all of these things, no matter what our job titles
