Ethics is “a branch of philosophy concerned with the study of questions of right and wrong and how we ought to live” (Banks, 2013). Also it involves making moral judgments about what is right and or wrong, good or bad. In the process of everyday life, moral rules are desirable, not because they express absolute truth, but because they are generally reliable guides for normal circumstances. A system of rules and principles helps to guide in making difficult decisions when moral issues arise. Ethics has been shown to be a central component in decisions involving ethical dilemmas. It is “concerned with standards of conduct and with “how I ought to act”, and standards of conduct may vary among different societies” (Banks, 2013). An ethical dilemma arises only when a decision must be made that involves a conflict at the personal, interpersonal, institutional, or societal level or raises issues of moral character. Richard Hare argues that we initially use an intuitive level of moral thinking when we consider ethical dilemma. This is the practical analysis of all the times we see or hear of law enforcement arguing that there was some technical item which drew their attention and suspicion and justifies their hunch that criminal activity is afoot.

Due to today’s advanced inventions and modernizations, Mudgett would not have been able to commit the majority of the crimes he did back in the late 1800’s. Police and investigators today are much more capable of preventing murders and fraud than they were centuries ago, mostly due to modern technology. There are also various modernizations such as laws that have been passed since then that would have proven troublesome for the crimes Mudgett committed. The innovations today including credit checks, safety codes, and insurance audits would likely result in Mudgett’s arrest and prevent the majority of his crimes.
Reward power in Detective Doe’s case is very complicated because of the harm extrinsic rewards can have on a person’s intrinsic motivations (Vansteenkiste et al. 2006). Intrinsic motivation is key in Detective Doe’s line of work because many of the people who join the NYPD do so out of a sense of wanting to give back and help communities. My homicide case began when the Shreveport Police Department (SPD) received a call from a male caller via 911 reporting he found a body of a black male found in a park near a cul-de-sac in a residential area. The Allison Ville Police Department and its budget would benefit from a change in the questionable practice of preventive patrol to a more community policing for the following reasons. The Allison Ville Police Department would need to deploy fewer officers in a area. This will save the department money by allowing the to spread there personnel out more evenly throughout a 24-hour shift. Yet, the Allison Ville Police Department can schedule heavy amount of foot patrol in a densely populated area or when there is an event. Consequently, a shift to community service would lead to the police officers having more time to complete their task and interact with the community. The Uniform Crime Report, which was developed in the 1930s, is commonly used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a record of crimes committed all across the United States. These crimes, which fall under two categories, Part I and Part II offenses, are reported by local police to the Federal Bureau of Investigation each year. Part I offenses are considered to be the more serious of crimes recognized by society. Criminology is something that has always fascinated me, and is a career that I hope to pursue in the future as an FBI agent. I frequently surf the web looking for short stories to read about different criminal cases and to find information about job opportunities and internships. One day I found a website of an organization that studied crime independently of the government. I was immediately intrigued by the organization, and began reading about the American Society of Criminology.

Crime is everywhere and it takes a special group or team of people to stop it, or make crime less tempting to do. The main job of police and security officers is to maintain justice, order and peace. In order to keep peace police officers must go through an academy that will prepare them for most situations that they will have to face later on in their career. Some situations require a more intense way to solve a problem such as using force or putting the perpetrator in fear so they will give in to what the police are asking. In some cases the peretrator(s) are too volatile or risky for the basic trained police officer, so the swat team must be used. The swat team unit or “special weapons and tactics” is a higher trained police force. It is a select group of officers that have been through more training and more experience than the average cop. Without the police or security civilians may not feel as safe as they do now when they are walking in the streets or going to a public event. For the people who want to be part of such a unit and are willing to put people before themselves will need to know what it takes to be a police officer.
