Governments are needed in order for society to function, but depending on the time period and the location each ruling is different because some praise a ruler while others lean more towards society as a whole (government for the people and by the people). The essence of human nature varies from one individual to another. Philosophers such as Niccolo Machiavelli, Karl Marx and John Locke all have different views regarding human nature which stem from their perspective on human reason. Their models of how an effective government should be run are demonstrated in The Prince, The Communist Manifest and Second Treatise of Government. People’s childlike image springs from the various passions each individual encompasses, but they fall short in paralleling the chastity the young possess. Sadly they are fickle, impatient, selfish and deceitful. However, other qualities they use are awareness of a troublesome situation and the act of avoiding it at full cost in order for them not to be involved and cause harm to themselves and others. He strongly believed that humans had the capacity to be rational. Luckily humans can work together to achieve a common goal whether it be conquest for acquisition, protection from conquest or refuge from one another. Machiavelli came to the realization that an organizing force of control was greatly needed to suppress peoples somewhat unsociable natures. In the, Prince, he provides logical stigmas a ruler or government should have in order to shape human nature into a functioning society. The basic elements of control are the following cruelty, hatred, fear and the benefactor of love. He analyses each aspect and establishes its advantages towards the designed mission of the governing body, which should sufficiently allow the common good to prosper. In addition, he came to the conclusion that love was not an adequate method of ruling due to the fact that it lacks binding force. Although people will promise to give up “…their blood, their possessions, their lives, and their children...” however, in the middle of a consequence they will dismiss the emotion of love and yield (Machiavelli, p. 66). Many empirical things can often still be debated and refuted by experts, but there is a general admittance to the idea that power is the root of many evil things. In all fairness, we must admit that a many evil things can in their essence, be great. And that is one of the many theories advanced by Niccolo Machiavelli in his well-known work, The Prince. The Prince serves a dual purpose of both teaching a person how to attain power, but also how to retain it. Incredibly enough, history has proven most of Machiavelli’s findings and theories to work well, while some have failed to effectively secure power for the rulers who did, in fact try them. His work, does obviously highlight one main fact, which is, that power is a well sought-after attribute, and most who attain are willing to do whatever is necessary to keep it.
Machiavelli's realization of the penultimate import of the people is probably most significant reason his book holds so much influence on realpolitik. He writes, "it is essential for a prince to possess the good will and affections his people, otherwise he will be utterly without support in time of adversity." (Chapter 9). Clearly, Machiavelli understands the source of power within a princely republic lay with the people, whom the prince must constantly court. No other political philosopher before him had ever given much significance to those being governed. The reason that Machiavelli felt that the subjects were vital to the prince maintaining his rule was because the implications of earning the hatred and ill will of the people are dire for the political future of both the state and the prince. Of the two sources of attack the prince must fear, one is a conspiracy from within inspired by the hatred of the people (Chapter 19). Additionally, the prince must be aware that actions of his intermediaries can reflect upon himself. In his work The Prince, Niccolò Machiavelli explores the complex relationship between a ruler and his people, but ultimately comes to the conclusion that the people, because they are crucial to the well being of the country, are to be manipulated in order for a country to thrive. In order to manipulate effectively one must keep the people oppressed, but not to the point of inspiring hate, and only when that balance is achieved is when a ruler can successfully manipulate their people.
The Prince by Machiavelli believed the best of both worlds should be, to be feared and loved by others. Unfortunately this isn’t the conventional way that things happen. If a choice was made, Machiavelli believed it was better to be feared as a leader, than to be loved as a leader. That does not mean he should be merciless or cruel, but that he should be ready to formulate a decision or resolution to almost any situation. It is better to be feared rather than be loved. This point is proven thought the novel The Prince by Machiavelli and “A Bronx Tale”.

One among many skeptics, including Lorenzo Valla, who had challenged the Catholic Church fifty years earlier in proving the falsity of the Donation of Constantine, Niccolò Machiavelli projected his ideas of fraudulence into sixteenth century Italian society by suggesting that rulers could only maintain power through propaganda, as seen with the success of Ferdinand of Aragon in Spain circa 1490. Today, the coined term Machiavellian refers to duplicity in either politics or self-advancement. Unlike most philosophers of the sixteenth century, Machiavelli wrote from the perspective of an anti-Humanist; he criticized not only the Classics and the Catholic Church, but also encouraged the deceitful use of religion and hated the humanist concepts of liberty, peace and individualism.1
